Subject: upgrade from viper 560xv to 5901

Hello all, This is my first alarm /remote start installation I've started, even though I'm able to read schematics and wiring diagrams that I have had to deal with, I'm having some difficulty understanding exactly which wire from the 5901 has to be connected to the appropriate wire in my 2004 F150 xlt. I've managed so far to have successfully connected the alarm using some of the existing wiring connections from the 560xv, my small dilemma is understanding the wiring for the remote start and whether or not I have to use the existing relay that's part of the circuit operation of the 560xv. I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions /information that will help me to successfully complete this do it myself project. Sorry for the lengthy post.

you will need to power up the 12v wires, start, ign, acc wires on the vehicle. this is done by the 5901. simple connect the wire output on the unit to the vehicles wire ( make sure you test of course)

do you have a wiring diagram of the truck ?

you will need to purchase a bypass module to override the anti theft. check out www.ifar.ca, www.idatalink.com, www.bypasskits.com . those are some good reliable bypasses.

Sincere thanks tedmond for the input, I have the bypass that was used with the previous system its a 566S specific to the F150; I don't have a wiring diagram for the truck but I have the schematic (text that states wire color and voltages, not all voltages; /use) that's what I've used so far and was able to get the security part of the 5901 functioning. I'm going to try to do the RS hookup as you've pointed out (12v, acc, etc.) Question; Do I need any relays or diodes or it's just to connect correctly that remains?

you might require a few diodes for door triggers, but other than that i think you are ok. you may also need an extra relay for what reason it may be (ie defrost, etc)

I've been running like crazy; finally got back to the install I hooked up all the needed wires (as far as I can see) however the RS isn't functioning, I get a code which represents "Manual trans mode, not initialized" my ride is automatic I also checked the setting of the 5901's brain (shows automatic) someone told me the bypass module I'm using is the cause (it's module specific for F150, hmmm?) any suggestions? The security feature is still working great distance and all.

You need to program it to the automatic setting, factory default is manual!

The viper 5901 is not at default setting of "Manual" it has been switched to "Automatic" so I guess I'm overlooking something else. I plan to clear all module memory and start configuration from the ground up, to see if I can find what step I may have overlooked. Thanks for the input.

Hello again, attempt to remote start "The lights flash, I hear relay(s) energize but no cranking of the engine" the system tries about 3 times and then I get remote start error displayed in the lc3 transmitter, however there are no flashing lights (diagnostic code(s))being displayed. Any suggestions anyone?

Sounds like a bypass issue! Try disconnecting the bypass, and insert the key in the ignition barrel and leave in the off position and attempt a remote start and post back with results!

I tried as you suggested trini (I'm 1 2) the results are the same and something that's strange even though the system shows that it's set to automatic, it's only with the neutral safety sw and ground connected can I get thus far as explained in my previous post. "Could it be that I received a faulty 5901 brain"?

Hey t&t t, sorry for the somewhat abrupt drop in the communication; I had to rush away. I tried your suggestion but nothing happened, anyway since I've gotten back I purchased a bypass (tbxkey) installed it and the results are the same so I must have done something incorrectly or possibly my truck has a problem with the electrical (I'm beginning to think)as a matter of fact one of the reasons for the upgrade is whenever I used the remote start (56xt) and I stepped on the brake I lost all dashboard and tail lights and would have to use the light switch to restore illumination. I purchased a new 5901 system (gave the other one to my son, it's not yet installed) installed it in my truck and I'm at the same place as before, any other thoughts from you or anyone else is sincerely appreciated.

Hello t&tec, I'm finally able to reply more so it's good news so I won't have to list the colors; everything is working great at present. My job had me out of town again so as I got back a couple of days ago I decided to check with an installer, he looked at the work that I did and said everything I did was correct (he actually said the work I did was great) he then started with some of the unused wires and came to a conclusion in about 3-5 mins there was 1 more connection needed, made a test with the wire his knowledge said it was and bingo my truck started remotely, it seems that the RED / blk wire (pin 9 conn. H3) had to be connected to 12 volts (no punt intended) as explained this was necessary for the starter. I sincerely thank you for taking the time to try to help me. So long til the next problem.
