I am trying to install keyless entry on this 2003. The remote start install was a breeze, but this two wire keyless is a real challenge. Has anyone done a 2003 Avalon? Where and what color are lock and unlock?

good deal, that is also what wirewerx tells me. They have the lock/unlock wire colors and locations as follows. Power Lock: GREEN/ ORANGE (-) BLUE 11 PIN CONN. IN DRIVER'S KICK
Power Unlock: YELLOW/RED (-) BLUE 11 PIN CONN. IN DRIVER'S KICK The only thing they don't provide is the child safety wire color, and you'll notice on this site there is information for every model of toyota except the avalon. any idea on what color that bad boy is? thanks

The information you have is incorrect. There are no negative-trigger lock/unlock wires avaialable in the interior of an Avalon.
The locks are negative trigger inside the two front doors, and the state of the unlock-detection wire also plays a role. (The unlock detection wire is often, mistakenly, called the child safety wire.)
The door ECU (which is the power window switch) turns these pulses into computer data, and sends it inside the car to the integration relay. The integration relay then operates the lock motors in each door.
You have two options:
1. Run some wires into one of the doors. You'll need two diodes, one relay, and a special wiring diagram. The wiring involving the unlock detection wire is not terribly complex, but it is a bit unusual, and might be a little bit of a challenge if you're new.
2. If you don't want to go into the doors, there is an easier way. You will need three relays.
Attached to the face of the fuse box is the integration relay; it has wires coming out of its left and right sides.
On the right plug, find these three wires near the top of the plug:
-blue/red: lock motor wire
-blue/white: driver's door unlock motor wire
-blue: passenger doors' unlock motor wire.
Take your three relays, and perform a 5-wire setup on each. of those.
NOTE: If your Avalon has a factory alarm, doing the 5-wire setup at the integration relay will NOT arm or disarm your alarm. If you have an alarm, better to go inside the door.

Looks like I'll be going into the driver's door...again. I went in before trying to follow someone else's instructions and couldn't determine which was the unlock detection wire. Then I tried the 3 relay 5 wire off of the fuse box. Not only is that a tangled mess of relays and wires, but I didn't get it working. Which in any case doesn't matter, because the Avalon XL that I am working on does have the factory alarm - so that takes that option completely out of play according to your info. I know that I can do this if I had the color of the unlock, lock and detection wires at the power window/lock/unlock controls. I assume that when you talk about special wiring, that I need to do the configuration illustrated by clicking diagrams, Toyota Child Safety Wire or whatever....that has the two diodes, and one relay. Correct? Your help is greatly appreciated.

I just installed a keyless remote in a 2003 Avalon. Oh boy. The best thing to do is go to www.designtech-intl.com for their diagram and design--a two relay, four diode solution that works and is installed in the passenger's door. It's installation note #212. However, I then cleverly decided to add a trunk release. I hooked it into the same power wire as the remote which is the one that runs 12+ to the passenger door. It blew something, but all fuses are still good. Now the door locks won't work unless I separately run power to the same terminal. Without that power, the door courtesy lights and the door unlock/lock only work when the ignition key is on--go figure--I can't. Anyone know what is going on? ------------- Joe

According to Chris Luongo a few posts back, only one relay is needed if you go inside the door? Did you try that method? I had that diagram from DesignTech - so you were able to follow that exactly and had success? You found that the lock/unlock detection circuits were the exact same colors as listed in the diagram? I don't remember seeing that...of course it has been a while since I was knee deep in wire and relays.
