I installed a Viper 5101 remote start/keyless into my 91 Subaru Legacy, and it won't start, it clicks 7 times when I push the start button, which I am assuming it does when the parking lights flash(they aren't hooked up), according to the manual that means it's in manual transmission mode and it isn't initialized, but I switched it to auto mode, still clicks 7 times, when I go back to the program menu it flashes twice on auto mode so it's definitely set to that. Any ideas?

even though you have it programmed to automatic mode the mt mode shutdowns still apply. it could be one of the 4 things listed here:

1. grey hood pin wire is getting ground.

2. the brown brake wire could be getting +12V

3. the BLACK/ white neutral safety wire isnt grounded.

4. the neutral safety switch is either not plugged in or is off.

blanx218 is on point and I'm going to guess it's either 3 or 4.

Why haven't you hooked up the parking lights. It's so cool to see them flash or stay on during a remote start. posted_image

Turns out it actually was in auto mode still, I'm not sure what I was doing before, but I think I had an extra menu to get to, it's working now though thanks.

Catback, it wasn't hooked up because I was just trying to get all the stuff that it needs first, just to make sure I get it working, then I'm gonna go through and hook up the other features. But my lights actually turn on anyway since they turn on/off automatically with the car.

I see...I'm more of a wire it up and install everything and then see if it works. After that all that's left is to button it all up and enjoy the success. But to each his/her own way of doing things.

Glad you got things sorted.

Ugh, I have a new problem now, it wasn't starting on the first try when cold so I upped the crank time, now it does something weird, it turns on but shuts off immediately, then tries to turn on again and repeats until I hit the brake. Problem is it doesn't give me enough time to check the shutdown diagnostics before it tries to start again.it kind of sounds like the remote start button is getting stuck, but its not the remote because it doesn't flash, and it seems weird that it shuts off when I hit the brakes.

Okay it actually stops after 3 tries, then gives me codes 3, 6, 5, repeat, 3 is low or no rpm, 6 is hoodpin, 5 is brake, the brake I know is fine, and I don't think there's combination codes, I am confused...

what do you mean by "it shuts down then gives you codes 3, 6, & 5"? are you getting that when you do shutdown diagnostics? also how are you running it tach, virtual tach, or voltage? in my opinion virtual tach is worthless.

Yea with the shutdown diagnostics, it gives me those codes in order. I just tried tachometer mode and it does the same thing

Sometimes it decides to start, not sure what's different. What I don't understand is that when it does this it always kills it then tries again 2 more times, when it was working though if it didn't start on the first try it wouldn't do it again until I pushed the button.

I think I'm going to try to just reset it completely and see what happens

When you tried tachometer mode, do you have the tach wire hooked up to the actual tach signal on the car?

Yes. But I reset it and it seems to be working fine now, but it was also working fine before it got messed up so we'll see.
