I have never bought an alarm system and was wondering what should I buy that is affordable? Are combo systems meaning ones that are alarms and remote starters any good? Where can I take it to have it installed or with the right information can I install it myself? What are things to watch out for when buying them from places like bestbuy ect.....?

big box stores will always cost alot more than independant shops.
any well known brand will do the trick for you. companies such as audiovox, DEI (Directed) - viper, clifford, Compustar, autopage etc are all very good and well known products to the industy.
depends on the car and your skill towards electronics, you can install or have someone do it for you.

Support you local stereo shops. Go to 2 or 3 shops close to you. get prices and compare.
Any shop can give you the exact price on installing an alarm. Just tell them you year make and model. Ask them if you car needs any extra modules to complete the install. Cash is King in this business. If they qoute you $400 to do a remote start combo alarm then counter offer them. maybe they will knock off $25 or $50.
Expect to pay more for Protected lines like Viper or Clifford.
If you install alarm yourself and you accidentally damage the alarm or your cars electrical system then its on your dime. A shop, that installs professionally would be responsible for those damages and they are less likely to make a mistake in the first place.
