Subject: ford focus door unlock stopped working
Date Posted: October 08, 2010 at 8:02 AM

Hi, need a little bit of help. I've installed alarm system on Focus 2001y Europe version, and in the begining it was working fine, door were locking and unlocking by alarm remote and by the key just fine, but after a while locking by remote stopped working, in fact it was sometimes working sometimes not untill it stopped, now only unlocking works ok. I've connected both lock and unlock wires to GEM box green connecter 1-st (lock) and 4-th wires (unlock). I've checked these two connectors on the GEM box with giving a short to a ground and on these two wires doors locked/unlocked. But now nothing. Could it be that I've used wrong wires? I've attched wiring photo. Could it be broken GEM box? How to check it? I'd appreaciate any ideas on how to proceed troubleshooting. Thanks!posted_image

I've just tested with original ford key remote control and door locks without any problem. So, gem box should be ok?

Lock wire is BLACK/ orange or BLACK/ red, unlock BLACK/ green.
They are on the two 3end plugs to the right with plugs down.
Make sure your alarm is giving negs on lock and unlock. If it was a 2 wire lock system from the alarm you will need diodes, 1N4004, bands to the alarm.

ok, so lock wire is on the first green plug, this one works ok for me, then unlock must be on the blue plug next tn the green one?

Yes and just to be confusing there are lots of similar coloured wires, door contacts, trunk release, blue and blue/red for indicators' lucky you don't have an upmarket with 4 plugs!

well, I've found in the blue plug door trigger wire, it reacts to door opening, but no lock wire. And even when I disconnect blue plug, door locks with remote key just fine. Could it be, that lock wire is in the same green plug as unlock wire?

That's why my bottom line says test.

OK, I've tested, each wire in both plugs. none of these acts similar as unlock wire, I've found only door triggers, trunk release, unlock wire, but no wire acting as lock wire. the one which was working before as lock wire (locking the doors on the short to the ground) is not acting the same. Although, original remote control ford key locks the doors without any problem. And I'm really confused now. I'd really think that GEM is broken and needs to be replaced, but HOW it works ok with original ford remote key?? Does it mean that this lock wire is not required to operate the doors? Anybody knows how central lock system is functioning in Ford Focus? What wires are mandatory? Are there some options? Could remote lock by ford original key work ok without a lock wire functioning, which is a must for 3rd party alarm system locking? Anybody wise share your wisdom please... :)

You could by-pass this, either you have 6 lock wires on your alarm or two.
With 6 configure it 4 motor interrupt, with 2 you need 2 relays, just go to the motor wires, white and yellow in your photo.

I have 6 wires on my alarm. 2 of them are not connected at all, one is lock, one unlock and two conected to the ground (lock/unlock wires are conected to these with relays of alarm system when locking/unlocking)

use your key to verify which of the white or yellow ires is lock or unlock then tell me the six colours of your alarm lock wires.

OK, I've checked wires, and the first 3 on the green plug are: yellow/black which gives impuls more then 10V on lock and 0.2V on unlock, and the next two are WHITE/ black wires, which act the same - 0.2V on lock and more then 10V on unlock. I'm a bit confused, that it's not 2 but three wires, and two of the three acts identically.

As of alarm lock wires, sure I can write down the colors, but not sure if it's important, because it's quite simple, it's 2 identical relays connected - one contact is connected short on idle to another, and when locking it connects to 3rd contact, the other 3 contacts are working the same way only on unlocking. I could draw some diagram how it's done if it would do any help.

OK, the yellow/black and either WHITE/ black, it shouldn't matter.
I'd be grateful if you could print the wires and their colours and what the alarm says or else the make of alarm.
They should be listed as follows:
Lock common.
Lock normally closed (NC).
Lock normally open (NO).
Same for unlock.

Ok, I get it, these are the wires of alarm:

black: lock normally closed (NC)
green: lock common
pink: lock normally open (NO)

white: unlock normally closed (NC)
violet: unlock common
orange: unlock normally open (NO)

OK;
cut car's yellow/black,
black to GEM box side, green to car side,
pink and orange shared 15amp (20amp if 4 door) fused to 12V+ constant.
cut BOTH WHITE/ blacks. The GEM box side of one, unused.
Then, white to remaining GEM box side.
Violet to BOTH remaining car side WHITE/ blacks.
OR connect to one, then branch out to a relay from the violet terminal 86, 85 to ground.
Unused GRM box side to 87a, then from the fused side of the pink and orange connect to 87, join 30 to the other WHITE/ black.
Also diode across 85 and 86, type 1N4004, band towards 86 (solder to the base of the pins). This method is safer, doesn't interfere with the car's electrics.
This should restore lock control and should still give you key or factory remote control .

ok, thanks for the advice! I've made some drawing to see if I understand it correctly. Is it correct? I'm nor sure about diode polarity. Also I wonder, what if factory remote control will be used, won't it switch relay I'll add?
And if unlocking the way it's connected now works ok, maybe it would be enough just to change wiring for locking, only these three wires - green, black and pink? posted_image

Yes, just use the lock side on the yellow/black.
The way it's wired won't affect the factory wiring.

well, I've tried to connect lock part as you've suggested, leaving unlock the way it was, and now lock/unlock works perfectly! :) thanks you a lot, you've saved me many hours which I'd spend looking for solution :) Thanks! :)
