I played with a Viper SmartStart yesterday and noticed that the 2-way communication is confirmation of when the vehicle received the command but does not actually indicate whether the command was executed successfully. The example, had the lift gate of the vehicle open, sent the lock command from the iPad, the app confirms the command was received at the vehicle, but the vehicle does nothing as the doors cannot be locked with a key fob (or remote app) when the lift gate is open.

Is this standard for ALL 2-way remote starters? would the Drone behave the same? I would love to see a message saying that the command was not successful rather than just seeing the command was received. I've only ever had experience with a one-way remote starter prior to this though, so not sure if this behaviour is typical.

You're talking about a vehicle issue, not an alarm issue. The SmartStart is only going to tell you whether the command was successfully sent to the alarm. The alarm probably DID send the lock pulse to the bypass/bcm/lock module, but the VEHICLE prevented it from actually locking. To my knowledge, there is no way to tell if the vehicle actually locked-just to tell if the alarm armed. I would consider connecting the instant trigger wire of the alarm to the lift gate pin. This would set your alarm off if the gate is open when it's armed. Or just make sure you shut it. On a QX56 I did once, I simply tied factory rearm to the power lift gate trigger wire to close it.
