Hello Ladies & Gentleman,

I have a 2000 E-350 7.3L TurboDiesel Conversion-van and I want to install a great Car Alarm on it. It has the Factory Power Door Locks and the Cheap Alarm (That does not work).

I would like a good unit, a remote start if possible, a paging system if they have one with no monthly fees.

300-400.00 max

Thanks, Russ

It's not important, I can spend more if need be, I just want a great system. Tell me the best for the money.

Thanks, Russ

DEI, = Viper/Hornet/Avital/Clifford, Compustar, A/Vox/Prestige/Code, Autopage.
All premium brands, all should be installed by professionals.
You pay your money and take your choice.

I happen to use Audiovox, but there are many good brands out there.

I'd say the most important thing to shop around for is a good install shop with a good reputation, that sounds like they know what they're talking about, and has a good warranty.

For $300-400 installed you should easily find a one-way starter/alarm combo, or maybe a two-way paging alarm.

A $400-installed 2-way alarm/starter combo is a little on the low side of pricing but not an impossibility. You might pay between $400 and $500.

The alarms with two-way remotes do not have a monthly fee, but you will need to be close to the car (within the range of the remote) to receive the page if the alarm is triggered.

Several companies offer extra-cost, monthly-fee setups where you can start, unlock, and sometimes track the location of the car with your cell phone or online.....but if that's not something you need, the regular 2-way remotes won't cost you anything to use.

Other tips:

1. Buying the product at one place and having another place do the install is usually neither economical nor convenient. Most shops charge extra to install equipment purchased elsewhere, and they'll charge you again if they have to remove/replace it for warranty issues.

Look for a place that sells both the product and the installation, someplace you can count on to guarantee both the product and install, hopefully for life.

2. If you decide to look on eBay, you'll see some no-name alarms from China that are inexpensive and have flashy-looking remotes. They usually don't work because they come with poor documentation and no tech support. I just removed one of them for a customer on Friday after a mechanic tried (and failed) to install it.

Hello Friends,

I am thinking about installing the Viper 5902v system,

I can buy the unit for 288.00 and the I*nstaller wants 350.00.

Is this good for the labor? He said it's about 4 hours to do it right.

I don't think nhe has installed the Viper 5902 before as he only has one Viper 5901 in stock.

I really want a shop that has installed many of them.

I can tell you I paid BestBuy in Wausau, Wi  $700.00 to insall a Viper 5301 in my wifes 2009 Corolla. That was for the remote start, bypass, relays, rear window defrost connection, trunk pop, & labor.  It was like 9 hours to do it.

If your unsure about a person/shop.... don't go there. Chances are you trust your gut feeling about somewhere and go with your first instincts. If that installer thinks that they can properly install a remote start/alarm system into a diesel vehicle with independant door triggers with a system they are unfamiliar with.... I'd go somewhere else.

For me to do that vehicle with a system that I know inside and out would take me about 3-4 hours. Not to say that I set the standard on installation times for a certain vehicle, but if this installer doesn't know a system and not familiar with the vehicle, the 4 hour time frame is estimating quite low. If you do decide to go with this installer, make sure you ask him ....." What if it takes you 7 hours ? Will the rate still be the same ? "

Thank You for all the intelligent replies.

I have all the Ford Shop Manuals for my 2000 E-350 Van and it includes the 2 main Volumes and the Electrical Book and a Diesel Supplement Book, 4 Books in all. I will give the installer all 4 Books so he can look-up every wire location in minutes. It should help time-wise.

If the Viper 5902v system has the "Wait for Diesel Start" built into the unit, should I still supply the installer the DEI 528T Pulse Timer Relay?

And what other relays should I install? The Tilt for a tow truck?

Or the Two Front door window-roll-down relaty?

Any Help would be mighty kind.

Russ

You won't need the 528t with that unit, 507M tilt module, up to you, 530T window closers, if done properly will add about 2.5 hours + labour to the job. So add that labour to the cost. Actually I find look -ups more of a hindrance, better to have the alarm manufacturer's info.

I've just Googled North Miami to W.Palm, I can't find the shop I was thinking of but one name came up, Cartronics, off 167th. in North Miami Beach, I obviously can't speak of their quality but I know they were around in the late 1970s so that does tell you something. BTW are German Autos BMW still trading in W.Palm Beach? Used to do work for them, I know Vista in Pompano and the Collection in South Miami are still there, all old customers of mine.

Thanks for the Notes Gents,

I just found an installer who only sells viper and knows the system inside-out, does not even need to look at the instructions because he has installed so many. That's what I was looking for.

He told me 200.00 plus any extra components I want to install, the window-open mod, etc.

So I will keep you all posted on the install.

And, could you name some plug-n mods that would be worth it to install,
like the
Directed Electronics 520T Back-Up Battery System

Install Essentials 507M Tilt Sensor

Install Essentials 620V Viper Electro Luminescent Indicator

Install Essentials 530T Window Automation System

And I also want a Loud, Very Loud Siren, is the Siren good that comes with the 5902?

Another thing, I have a high quality Police Strobe Light system on the Van, it has 4 strobes in the front and 4 strobes in the rear using 2 switches front/rear.made by, Nova ULTRAPAK 185 Watt 8 Head Power Supply has great power. I believe there is a connection on his head unit to allow the Alarm to flash the strobes when it goes off.

Think I should hook them up?

Thanks, Russ

Yes you will have a horn out put, use that IMO the only accessory worth while on your list is the 530t, I would add air horns the 507M and a 508d dual zone prox.

Thanks for the notes,
I ended up buying the following:

DEI 506T I.T. Audio Sensor
DEI 507M Tilt Sensor
DEI 508D Radar Field Disturbance Sensor
DEI 509U Ultrasonic Sensor Kit
DEI 520T Back-Up Battery System
DEI 528T Pulse Timer Relay
DEI 530T Window Automation System

This way the installer has everything and we can
decide what not to use.

I will also bring my own boxes of connectors, 3M Heat Shrink,
container of wire spools, 10Ga. power feeds & Fuse Blocks,
Kester Solder & my iron, and I printed all the wiring diagrams
I could find for the 2000 E350 7.3L Diesel Van.

Amazon had good prices on the Mods and I have the Prime Shipping
with the free 2 day delivery. I love the Prime Shipping Club, All overnight packages are only 3.99 each. It's only 79.00 a year. I buy a lot from Amazon so it pays for itself quickly.

I will remove the two front door panels before I go for the installation.

My Diesel Van has 2 Batteries, one under the hood and the 2nd under the van on the frame.

Does anyone know of the Company that makes the "Car Disable" system via telephone call? Like the one used on Bait-Car TV Show?

I guess it's called a carjacking system?

Thanks, Russ

System Installed,

The Remote Start is great, allows for the glow-plugs to light-up then fire, and the Turbo Timer Cool-Down is great. I have it set for about 4.5 minutes. I have the Toggle Switch Kill for the Remote Start in case of a worker under the hood.

The Head unit is in a hard place to get to, it's very hard to find any wires on the install, I'm very impressed. The Remote Start is set for 10 minutes to allow the A/C to get cold. When you tap on the brakes the Remote Start turns off. While the remote start is running it also lights the tail lights and the front turn signal lights. All you need to do is install the key and turn while running, it does not crank the starter again.

When the alarm goes off it turns on the Viper Siren and my Hella Horns, plenty loud and annoying.

Overall I am pleased with the Viper 5902v, it is good quality.
The range is great, works from my property, I will test it on a store this week.

The alarm lights work great, runs the tail-lights, my Nova 1858 UltraPak 8 Strobe-Light system and looks great.

Anyone with a diesel, the 5902 has the turbo timer for the cool-down and is well worth it just for that. I usually had to wait about 5 minutes for the temps to cool down to 300 before I shut it down.

Thanks Everyone,

Next project is the Whelen HHS2200 Police Siren and Light Controller Hand Held
