I know there are previous posts about installing certain types of remote starters for the 05 Grand Cherokee, but I was looking into making my own remote starter, and was wondering how conceivable this might be. I already know how I'm going to get the remote signal into the vehicle and how to trigger relays with the device. More specifically I was also wondering how many relays/wires I would have to drive to get the intended result of a remote start (starting the engine along with the heating/AC unit w/out setting off the alarm/locking myself out). I have wireless locks already and don't think I'll have much trouble with that last part, but any information/help people can offer would be greatly appreciated.

You are probably on to a hiding to nothing as regards costs and vehicle damage, you will need various over rides, hood open, disable if manual transmission, brakes etc.
Then there's an immobiliser by-pass, tach sensing etc. etc. Far cheaper to buy an add-on (hit lock say 3 times on your remote) from the likes of DEI. There is a circuit shown here on the relay section.

I agree, for the cost of a stand alone remote start it doesn't seem feasable to build something that won't do the job as well. Along with relays and immobilizer, you need a timer of some sort. That alone is half the cost of a RS...
