I got a new alarm installed (Avital 5103); installer left the valet switch programed for the default. Its my third DEI alram and I have the programming book, Just cant seem to switch from one valet button push to disarm w/key, to 2 o 5 presses to shut off. I get to menu 2, feature 4 fine, switch over to option 2 (2-5 pulses) but then can't get it to change the setting to what I want. I must be missing something, anything I am doing wrong?
The instructions don't cover how to change the actual number of times you push the valet switch.
The installer is a good guy and does good work, but belts the systems out and I think keeps things simple so it easier for him to do repairs and trouble shoot when people come back. I just don't like how out in the open the valet switch is and want to make it a bit harder than one push to shut off the alarm if someone finds my spare key.
Also would I better off be setting up some kind of ghost switch instead? I will be changing the stereo and add fogs and other switches, a ghost switch might be as easy as an extra oem fog light switch?

Dont you have to press the Unlock button for the 2 to 5 press' option? Not lock, that will just choose 1 press. I could be wrong, I'm not by my manuals, and I usually use one of my Bitwriters to set this.
I may be big moron, that dawned on me also this morning, but is it "unlock" then unlock the number of time you want to program the valet switch for? or unlock and then the number of times you want to program te switch?
Makes sense the valet button itseld would play rile i n this as that is what is maintaining training mode.
I can see why the installers leave it set on one :-)
Thanks for the help, figured it out. I was a moron and using the Lock button. When I went to the program menu today, I used the Unlock button, and it would beep. When I actually stopped to listen I heard it chirp the number of times for the switch to be pressed to disarm. the button is still to way easy for anyone that know alarms to find, but at least someone won't be able to press it once and disarm it.
Going to look into what the mnual called ghost switches now. Any suggestions on those?
ghost switching in your dei manual refers to making your valet switch a "ghost", cut off the switch and connect the gray wire of the plug to anything that can pulse 12volts that you can control.
They would need your keys in addition to pressing the valet switch, so knowing where the switch is, and how many times to press it does'nt mean much.
The keys and transmitter are usually together, so...
If I set it to 3 pulses, guaranteed the customer will forget it.
