I purchased a used 1998 bmw convertible with the alarm already installed. When starting the car and top is down, the doors auto-lock and the top starts raising on its own for a couple seconds and stops (not supposed to raise at all). From other research I am told that it is due to the door pulse being too long and it is triggering the top as well. I removed the unit and started the car fine with no issues with the top.
1) is there a way of adjusting the pulse? I did not see any switches inside the unit
2) if i unplug the unit permanently do i risk compromising any of the electrical system? do i need to rewire anything?

There are circuits in the relay section to shorten the lock pulse, see the relay section, you need to go to 0.4 second, or more expensive but simpler, use something like a 528t from the lock wire to shorten the pulse.
Removing shouldn't affect the vehicle if it was wired as per installation instructions.
That was already a defunct unit back in 98 as far as I know. More modern units tend to have a shorter pulse which can be programmed. You could also use an aux output on a more modern unit to control the roof and window close on this vehicle independently of lock and unlock.

Amateurs assume, don't test and have problems; pros test first. I am not a free install service.

Addendum. Look at the diagramme showing constant to momentary output, although your pathway will be negative. PM I am an idiot for a definite circuit remembering your lock/unlock (you will only need this on the lock side) is a negative pathway.

Thanks for the input. If I elect to completely remove the unit (keyless entry and a outdated alarm system are not a big deal to me) do just unplug the unit and leave the 8 pin and 14 pin connectors alone and sensor onneted or do I need to do some rewiring? At first I was afraid straight removal would disable the starter, but to this point that has not been an issue.

Thanks

Just unplug it. If at a later date you intend to fit something else, the existing wiring will be your guide, or ask someone like myself who does these in his sleep!

Thanks Howie II.

I kind of figured that the alarm was way outdated at the time of install considering the copyright on the manual is from 1993!

Yes I looked at the spec sheet but though there was no age anywhere such as copyright date the cover and wiring illustrations told me that.
