Subject: remote starter 2003 town & country

I just installed an Avital 4113L into my wife's 2003 Town and Country minivan.

The remote start works, but it will crank for 3-6 seconds and stop, it will then attempt to restart and it will fire up and run without any issues. I did install the 180 ohm relay via relay on the correct wire within the ignition harness, without this it did not work.

I have the tach wire hooked up to the ignition coil, I had the remote start unit learn the tach signal as well. Everything seems fine there.

The unit works but I am just wondering why it always takes 2 attempts to start, it is cranking over with plenty of duration so that is not the issue.

Any tips? I have installed 3 remote starters in the past without any issue. I am also a licensed master electrician, so I have the basic skill set but I recognize the need for some guidence here.

The other issue I have is no climate control power when remote started, I suppose I need a relay to supply power to the climate control circuit?

Thanks for the help!

That should be-

"180 ohm resistor via relay"

Thanks for the quick reply.

Maybe I am wrong, and please correct me if I am, but the tach signal is a reference for the remote starter so it can figure out how long to crank the engine over, right?

My enging cranking duration is fine, it cranks 3-4 times longer than it normally takes to start wih a key.

yeah.
Put the key in and turn it to the run position and try the remote starter and see if it does the same thing. I notice it only lists one ignition wire but did you by chance have any wires in the ignition harness left over?

It does the same thing with the key in the run pos.  I do not have any extra wires at the ignition harness.

this will sound weird but try programming the wait to start for a few seconds. it's possible the fuel is not getting up there quick enough if that makes sense. i've had to do that in the past.

I can try that but the fuel pump runs and shuts off before the starter is engaged- the delay is pretty long as is.

hmm well usually if tach is learned properly it will keep on cranking until it starts up. did this van even have an immobilizer?

It does not have an immobilzer.

I think the remote starter is cranking he default of 6 seconds and gives up, and trys again. It is just odd because the second attempt ALWAYS works without delay.

Thanks for all your help.

so you learned tach by turning the vehicle on and then holding the programming switch and once you let go the parking lights will flash?

I started the vehicle with the key, pressed the switch until the LED came on remained lit. I then released the switch and shut the car off, I cannot recall if the lights blinked or not.

Any other ideas on this problem?

Does it sound like an Avital issue or a vehicle issue?

Thanks

Has anyone else ever heard of such a problem?

Okay guys, problem solved.

I sat down and thought about this for awhile and realized that I was grabbing an accessory feed off the remote starter to energize the relay that enabled the 180 ohm ignition path (if that makes sense).

So instead of coming on when cranking I had it on all the time, this was screwing up the van because it didnt see a momentary 180 ohms, it saw a constant 180 ohms.

To fix this I re-fed the relay with the ignition circuit from the van. HOWEVER, this required a diode so the van did not see 180 ohms x2 when the key was used. The diode isolated the relay so that it only comes on when the remote starter is triggered, no other time.

The starter works great and my wife should be thrilled when she opens the remotes on Christmas day!
