Hello. I've installed several remote start systems in Ford vehicles. On two of them I managed to find a T-harness to take care of most of the steering column wiring, and used solder and heatshrink on the other connections throughout the car. On my latest install, a 2007 F250, I picked up a viper system and I'm going to solder all of the connections. I'd prefer to cut the wires in the steering column, slide on heatshrink, splice, solder and heatshrink, but I'll lose around an inch of length, and I don't think that will work. I'm planning instead to cut a portion of the insulation off, split out the strands, splice in the remote start wire, solder, and tape with 33+, so I don't lose any length. It's a tilt column, so I think I can't lose any length on the harness.
Do most of you guys use the strip, split, splice, solder, and tape method? Any problems with good quality tape coming loose?

That's what I do. If your worried about the tape coming off you can always put a small zip tie on the end of the tape and that will keep it from coming off
