Well the other day i got a viper 5901 installed in my car. The installer used the fortin evo-all bypass unit. last night on my way to work all of sudden my in-dash dvd player started just turning off and on and then my gauges would stop working and then come back on.

So this morning i look up under my dash i see he used wire nuts to connect the wires, the wires he didn't use are just cut with the bare wire showing. I moved the viper unit and it ended up blowing my start/run fuse for the car.

I don't even want to bring it back to him and fix cuz if thats the kind of work he does i'm all set. i plan on cleaning it all up myself and was just wondering what do you guys use to "cap" the unused wires?? Do you guys solder the wires together and then just tape them or use something else to cover them??

Thanks for any help

Here is the way I do it.  Cut the un-used wires cleanly to whatever lenght you want.  ( You can leave them full length or cut them to as short as 2 inches, your choice. )  Try to pull some insulation down so the insulation fully covers the cut wire and no wires are exposed.  Some people use a smooth pair of crimpers / pliers to stretch the insulation.  Next take a small length ( about 3/4 inch ) of heat shrink tube in the appropriate diameter and insert the wire end into the tube so that the wire is about 1/8 inch short of the tube end.  Apply heat.  You can bundle adjacent prepared wires into groups in larger diameter heat shrink tube.  Use tie wraps to bundle / secure groups of unused long wires neatly out of the way.

Here is a bench prepped remote starter and the bypass module prior to vehicle install.  Yellow arrows show heat shrink wires and wire bundles.
