noob question here.
I've installed a remote start in my 88 ford ranger no problems, worked the first time, so now im stepping up to an 02 ford escape. If the key is in the on position, I can apply 12v to the tan/blu wire and start the vehicle. It will not turn over if the key is not in the on position. I dont see a chip or anything, but I guess I will have to bypass the security system. I have been reading that I need a relay? I just dont know enough about how the system works? do I need to apply 12v to something? do I need to ground something? why do I need a relay? How does the anti theft work?
any insight would really help, thanks.

I believe the 2002 Escape has FORD'S SECURILOCK ANTI-THEFT TRANSPONDER SYSTEM (PATS3 ) and
requires a bypass module. Here is a link to Bulldog Security for their wiring guide :

The DEI 1100F bypass module, while discontinued, is available "online" for less than

You arent going to be happy with me... I got it off ebay... some chinese thing called an RS300. It was exactly what I wanted for my old rusty Ranger... just a no frills remote start.
Ive discovered it gets a little more complicated. Thanks for that link, it has a FAQ I can look through. Basically, I dont know what I am supposed to do when I get the part in that bypasses the security.

The Ford PATS3 immobilizer system uses a transponder chip in the ignition key and an antenna receiver on the ignition switch to allow the car to start and run. Each transponder key is programmed to the car. If you purchased a plain metal ignition key, it would fit in the ignition switch and turn but not start and run the cars engine. There are many bypass modules that allow the car to start without a working key. Some do this thru Data and others use a transponder chip ( like the one in the key ). The DEI 1100F is a Data type bypass. You need two working keys to program it to the car. As far as the car is concerned, it is just another transponder key. The bypass module is controlled by the remote starter to turn on and off at the correct time to allow a remote start but not interfere with the cars normal operation or remove any security features.
Your remote starter system should have an output called (-) Status Output on Ground When Running that connects to and controls the bypass module. Hopefully the installation guide explains this. ------------- Soldering is fun!

So I dont have to splice anything in to the cars security system, I just have to broadcast a radio signal at the proper time that I am starting the car, that matches the key frequency? Thats pretty straightforward. I dont see where the key gets energized with voltage, like contact points so I was confused. Thanks.

I couldnt get one of those dei units in to my little town soon enough for christmas, so heres what I did. I took the little trap door off the key, and removed the chip. I then took the steering column cover apart and set the covers aside. I took the black box with the black ring that surrounded the keyhole off the column and taped the chip inside that little ring. I placed the whole thing aside. Then I hooked up all the wires as usual, and hit the button, and it fired right up.
Thanks for helping me understand the basics of the system so I could get the thing to work before christmas... now Im sure I can get the bypass box to work when it comes in.

new problem here. When I remote start the vehicle with the doors locked, the factory alarm goes off. if I unlock the doors the alarm stops. if I shut the car off the alarm stops. how do I prevent this?

Does your remote start unit have an output called Alarm Disarm? Most do. Just connect that output to :

NOTE *1 The GEM (Generic Electronic Module) is located behind the Center Console on the floor. Remove the BLACK panel to the right of the Gas Pedal, the carpet covers this panel, the plugs face the drivers side of the vehicle. ------------- Soldering is fun!
