Hi all! I have a 98 cadillac deville and installed ready remote 24921b. When I press the remote the parking lights flash but the unit doesn't crank. Red led on controller gives 5 flashes indicating an issue with the hood pin/on-off switch. I've checked the wiring numerous times and verified the wire to be ungrounded. Also controller feeds 0v to ignition during the process. Any ideas? Thanks.

teambaja-

  The older 24921 has no LED to display shutdown diagnostics, and has a 4 button remote.  Here is the manual link:

  Earlier this year, Ready Remote started using a stripped down version of the Avital 4113 (https://www.directeddealers.com/manuals/IG/Avital/N4113_2008-07print.pdf  ) with a single 1 button remote--they also identify that unit as model 24921.  That unit has an LED on it which can be used for diagnostics.  My guess is that is the unit you are trying to install.  

Based on the symptoms you report, I would verify the following:

1.) The obvious--make sure both fuses are installed and the unit is getting power.  Verify with a DVM.

2.) Verify that you have a good ground.

--Note:  Ready Remote identifies the following signals in the 5 pin connector as the H3 Auxillary Harness; Avital refers to the connector as the H2 Remote Start Harness...Same wire locations and colors.

3.) you can temporarilly disconnect the hood pin H3/4 (Gray)  to make sure there is no intermittent connection to ground casing the issue.   Once debugged, you can hook the hood pin back up, but this just removes it from question.

--Note; One of the following inputs may be preventing the unit from starting.   I suspect if this is the issue, the diagnostic indicator is possibly from factory test shutdown...

4.) Ensure  that you  have grounded the H3/1 (BLACK/ White) neutral safety switch input to a good ground.   This is sometimes connected to ground through the toggle switch provided in the kit--if so, also make sure the switch is "on". 

5.) Make sure your brake connection H3/3 (Brown) is resting at an open until the brake pedal is depressed, and that there is +12V  on this wire when the brake is depressed.  You can also disconnect this to ensure this is not the issue--- for debug only---just make sure you have your transmitter handy to stop the RS during debug if needed.

lectricguy- Excellent response! You are exactly right. It must be the Avital version because it does have a diagnostic led. Being the first remote start I've ever attempted to install I didn't want to ground or utilize the neutral safety switch wire without instructions to do so. The 24921 instructions are for the "old" 24921 and do not show how to connect the neutral safety switch wire. If anyone is installing this remote start they need to use the Avital installation manual to do so without confusion. Ready remote should have repackaged the 24921 with the Avital instructions or at least noted that on their website. I talked to tech support 2 times and no one metioned the neutral safety wire. Newbie installers of the 24921 need this information. I'm going to ground the neutral wire today to see if it will crank. I think it will. Good job lectricguy! I'll let you know what happens.

Hi again. I connected the neutral safety lead to ground and the car would not start with the remote. I can get it to start through the controller by touching the "activation" lead (WHITE/ blue) to ground once but still not with the remote. Thanks again lectricguy.

I got it to start. The 24921 manual says 1 button default start. If you press the button 1 time the parkings light will flash but that's it. If you press the button twice it starts but the parking lights do not flash while in remote start mode. Thanks again.

 I'm glad to help.   As far as the 1 button remote operation, the function of the remote depends on how long the button is pressed; 1 second for remote start (assuming default 1 activation pulse), and 3 seconds for car finder (lights flash 5 times).   When running,  1 second  button push unlocks the doors if you hook up that feature, 3 second push shuts down remote start (regardless of activation setting).

 The parking lights should be on when running; this is the default setting.   The polarity of the parking lights (i.e., whether  the parking light wire output is +12V or Ground when active) is determined by the jumper on the side of the brain; the factory setting should be positive (+12V) output--this all depends on where you connect to the light circuit in the vehicle.

Hey guys I have the one button ready remote model#24921 if that means anything. I'm about to do this install on a 2002 sentra and I'm unsure about a couple of things. It would be great if you could help me out. So in the manual H1/4 (-)Activation Input wire, I see that teambaja said that he grounded it. Now I have no idea what wire this goes to. Does it get grounded? Also H3/1 Neutral Safety Switch Input, now I'm pretty sure with what you guys have said that this gets a good ground right? Also H3/5 200mA Status/Rear Defogger, I have no idea what wire this gets in the car. One last thing is the H1/9 Light Flash Output, this gets the hazards right? either - or + correct? Guys you would be a life saver if you could help me out. Even though I'm a Licensed E-2 Electrician in Connecticut, I not the greatest when it comes to cars. Thanks

   I highly recommend that you read the Avital 4113 manual (link in previous post) before you begin.  It offers better insight than the newer Ready Remote manuals.   As for your questions...

  H1/4 (-)Activation Input wire--This wire is an optional input.  Any time this wire sees a ground, the remote start will attempt to start the vehicle. Normally this wire is left open with the end taped to prevent any inadvertant contact.  Teambaja used this wire to test his installation.  Application for this wire is to use the remote start with a switch in the vehicle, or to use the remote start with a remote cell/paging system to start the car.  It could also be used for test of the installation. 

 H3/1 Neutral Safety Input--You are correct...This signal is required to be grounded for the remote start to operate.  The intent is to prevent Remote Start from occuring when the car is in gear.   If your car cannot start in gear, as most automatics today, this signal is just grounded.  If the vehicle can start in gear, this wire must be connected to the neutral start switch in the vehicle; this prevents the vehicle from remote starting unless in Park or Neutral.  Also, a switch is usually provided for use in series between the wire and the ground.  The intent is that when the switch is open, the remote start will not operate, as the Neutral Safety wire does not see a ground.  When the switch is closed, the unit will be able to start as normal.   The application of the switch is for a "Valet" mode, used when having the vehicle serviced, etc.  For a 2002 Sentra automatic, this signal can be grounded through the supplied switch.

 H1/9 Light Flash Output--This output activates any time the unit is used to lock or unlock the car, or during remote start.  The output can be wired to either your parking lights (common in the US/Canada), or your hazards (common in Europe).   Your choice.  Whichever you choose, make sure the polarity shorting plug on the side of the unit matches your vehicle's signal polarity for the chosen lights.  If I recall, Ready Remote's default is Positive (+).  For a 2002 Sentra, you can pick up positive parking lights in either the driver's kick panel or at the light switch.  Remember to test every wire with a volt meter before connecting. 

 H3/5 200mA Status/Rear Defogger-This signal has 2 functions; Factory default is Status output-- This provides a ground anytime the vehicle is running.  Typical application is to enable an immobilizer bypass, used to start the car if you have a "Chipped" key.  If you don't have an immobilizer, or if you are not using the Status output (only one Status output on the Ready Remote as I recall),  the output can be configured as either a 10 minute constant output or as a pulse (Depends on how it is wired into the vehicle), that would be used to turn on your defoggers in your car.  For a 2002 Sentra, you may have an immobilizer (some models did), and if so, will need a bypass.    Use this status signal to enable your bypass.
