Hey all,

A buddy of mine just tipped me off to this place, its sweet. I love the databases.

Anyways, I have a 98 cavalier that died going down the road, had good compresson and spark but low fuel pressure so I put a new fuel pump module in.

Now it will start for like a second, then die. Theft light is on. Brought it to a mechanic and he did the reprogram passlock thing (didn't help) and now he wants to put in a new ignition module.

Can I just hook up a passlock bypass (like pljx) to bypass the whole theft/passlock issue? Or do the bypasses not work that way?

To program that bypass you would have to be able to get the car running

So a bypass basically takes the resistance from a key/ignition and memorizes it so it can output the right resistance when their is no key... right? Is that why I have to get the car running first?

So another question then, can I just hook up the passlock wires from a used "working" ignition cylinder and program the bypass? Then unhook it and use the original cylinder.

That way I don't have to tear apart the whole steering column (this car just isn't worth that much).

Here is some info from previous posts that might help or give you some ideas.

This is a Passlock1 bypass from Audiovox.

Not sure if Passlock1 can be re-learned ( registered ) like Passlock2. Here is the Passlock2 method form another post.

Tap any resistor value between the passlock reference wire and the Passlock wire, cut it off the keyswitch side of the passlock wire so only the resistor sits on the car side.

Start your car, it will fail, be patient

Wait 10 minutes with ignition on, turn it off and start again, do it 3 times and the new value will be registered.

If you don't want to go through the three x 10 min. ignition ON to reprogram then ensure you use exactly the same resistor as the vehicle already had in the ignition switch and you're done.
