I'm installing a R/S into this car.
The bypass I'm using is a Directed 555XW.
I connected the "sync, clock, and data" wires according to the install guide.
The car will only start with the key in the ignition.
Do I need to connect the key sense wire to ground, the key sense wire (blue) in the car or is it not used?
I think I found the problem. I'm looking at the wiring diagram for the car and the alarm.
The "key sense" wire from the 555XW is an output, correct?
It supplies ground to the blue/black wire in the car so the ECM "thinks" the key is in the ignition.
I'm going back to where the car is tomorrow and try that.
DEI does not show the 555XW for use on the 2001 ES300 in the pull down look-up guide. The 555XW install guide I found does not list your car either but the 555XW compatability chart does list your car. ( Gotta love DEI...) Never used a 555XW so I can't say for sure if it will work or not.
Here are the wire colors you should see in the 2001 ES300.

Keysense should be connected. Not sure if it is an output (to disarm the cars alarm) or an input to turn off the bypass when a key is inserted.
The are some good bypass modules that are listed for your car. The iDatalink ADS-TBSL TI or ADS-TBSL KO will work, as will the PKALL from DEI or Key-Override-All from Fortin.

Soldering is fun!
Thanks for the info. I'll post later today if it works.
No good. The LED on the 555XW flashes then shuts off so it should have learned the key. I can only start the car with the key in the ignition.
I'm buying a universsal "key box" and try it that way.
