Subject: astrostart rs 623 stopped working
Date Posted: February 06, 2011 at 2:12 PM

So I bought a used 2005 Ford Explorer which has an AstroStart RS-623 installed.

The previous owner said it worked fine until his car battery died and when he replaced the battery, the starter no longer worked.

The lock/unlock works fine, as does continuous mode.

When I try to start the vehicle, the headlights turn on, the starter tries 3 times, and then the LED on the brains flashes 10 times.

Any ideas?

It's either in Valet mode or the installer installed a ON/OFF switch that needs to be turned back to the ON position.

It appeared the pats bypass is not working. Put the key in the ignition in off position then try remote start it. If it starts then you have a bypass issue.

In the Owners manual that I found on their website it doesn't say anything about a valet mode - how do I disable that?

I tried starting with key in off position, no luck.

yes i agree with moonliter on this one, if it was the switch it would not work in continuous mode.

if it was the switch in the off position it would give you 8 flashes

If it is a bypass issue, can I re-program that myself, or do I have to take it to a dealer?

look under the dash and see if you can get what type of bypass it is and we can help you from there.

you should be able to do this your self

if it is not possible to fix this one it would not be that hard to install a differnt one if need be.

when you remote start it with out the key in the ignition does the theft light go out?

I actually can't see any kind of theft light, I'll have to consult google on where that is supposed to show up on an 05 explorer.

The bypass module is an ifar key-override-sl2 which appears to need two keys to program for my vehicle, unfortunately i only got one key with it...

the theft light is on the instrument cluster it will say theft or a padlock icon.

if the theft light does not go out try disconnecting the power on the bypass and plugging it back in

if that does not work

then if you have a DMM (test light should work in a pinch) try testing the blue wire of the remote starter to make sure it is getting 12 volts when attempting to remote start.

it is the starter wire of the remote starter

The key-override-sl2 can not be reprogrammed once it's been initially programmed. If it is the bypass module, then the THEFT light in/on the dash will flash quickly during remote start at which point I would start looking at the GWR wire instead since the bypass can not loose programming.

Ok thanks, I'll check that out - there is a theft light on the dash and it flashes away like crazy so I'll borrow a DMM from work and poke around a bit tonight.

the ground while running on the astrostart is dk. green

if that does not test good then you can use one of the programable outputs to do the same thing
