Im almoat finished building my Lamborghini Diablo Roadster replica. My mind is pretty much mush right now so I need some help figuring out how to wire something.....

I installed door poppers to relays and switches inside the car so you can just push a button and the door will pop up. I want to make it so the doors cant be opened by the switch when the car is in motion. I figure I need a relay the disconnects when the key is on or maybe when the brake pedal is pressed. When I ask this question at my local Radio Shack or Auto Parts store they just look at me funny..... I have found some disconnecting realys but they have all stated that they must be used with a mometary switch for the disconnect feature and for not long periods of time... Anyone have a part number for a relay that will work or a better idea on what Im wanting to do?

Thanks in advance!

hi,
what transmission are you using?..automatic or manual. engine also, but that isn't critical.

Ignition on cut out:
1 5 pole relay Bosch cube type automotive yes as sold by R/Shack at an exorbitant price.
Cut power supply to door poppers.
Ground to 85.
Ignition to 86
Source i.e. fused side of cut power lead to 87a.
Other side to 30.
A more sophisticated version would use a latching relay from the start wire but it's a lot more complicated and needs a latching plus two regular relays.

Can the doors be opened manually without the poppers? There could be some safety concerns if not.

If the vehicle has a VSS you could use that signal with a frequency switch to disable the poppers whenever the vehicle is in motion. If the vehicle doesn't have a VSS you can make one by using a magnetic switch on the drive shaft.

I was scared to give that answer Kevin because I haven't a clue how to make one!

I agree. If you can open the doors manually go for it if not, there is a safety concern.

I do have the regular cable driven door release handles also so no problems in that area. I like the VSS idea, but Im for sure going to be changing the sbc drivetrain out for something else in the future and not sure of the next transmission I wil be using. So I really dont want to invest the time into wirng it into the VSS only to have to change it again at a later date. I think I will try the above wiring suggestion and wire it into my brake switch and see how that works....

Thanks for the suggestions!

I was thinking charge light - which is good with impatient kids but bad for the intentional drop off.

It could have a simple override (yes, engine is running but I DO want to open the door!)

Otherwise yes, a VSS sensor or reluctor sensor on the drive train (sensing a universal joint etc). Maybe a magnet on a dive shaft.
(I'm assuming it has no anti-lock braking system or stability control).

Whatever system, it should energise (open) the NC contacts that feed the doors, hence motion BREAKS the door switches - they are normally enabled (for safety - as Howard described).

(You might still add an override to dispose of cigarettes or triggered hand grenades, or exit yourselves....)
