I am installing a Viper 211hv keyless system on this 88 Landcruiser. The truck doesn't use relays. I have read that rocker switchs wear because relays aren't in place. I have read threads at ih8mud.com that add relays to avoid large amps passing through switches.

I tried to install without the 30amp spdt relays. The first time I used the remote I popped the fuse on the keyless unit. The instructions say that on some vehicles a actuator is necessary and it says see tech tip 1041. I have tried to find this 1041 but it seems difficult to get unless you are a pro installer.

Can someone confirm that on this vehicle I need relays or not? Is there another way?

Thanks for any help.

The 211 has built in relays so extra relays are not required.
Here's a diagram giving you all the colours and layout, cut the lock and unlock wires between the switch and the motors.
You will not put ANY extra strain on the switches because they are completely passive in this operation.

1041 is not relevant to a vehicle of this age, you probably either didn't cut the wires and joined straight to them. Since the motor wires are ground at rest, bang goes your fuse. Note the purple and purple black go to a 12V+ constant through their own fuse, at least 15 amps, not the 211's fuse.

Howie,
Thanks so much for sharing your expertise. If I cut the lock unlock wires will it make the lock/unlock switch inoperable? That is a stupid question sorry. I'm sure it will, is there a way to do this that will keep the switch working?

I did join them straight in, pop went the fuse. I wish I didn't have to work today so I could fix this right now.

Thanks again.

I'm not going into why, it takes too long! Look at 1041 and trace the paths across the relays!
But yes of course your switches will still operate, this won't affect their use at all so don't worry.

Howie,
I just got the chance to try the wiring the way you suggested. I cut the lock and unlock wires and set them to the correct connection. It still popped the fuse. I don't know what I have done wrong. I fed the 12v to the Viper 211 computer and the voilet wires from the same source that feed the switch on the car. I also grounded the viper. Those are the only wires I connected. I guess I could have reversed the motorside and the batteryside. I am doing the connections at the driver's door so the switchside would be the batteryside?
My wife is ready to shoot me since her truck is not drivable with a mess of wire hanging out of the drivers door.
Thanks for any help you can give me since I am in over my head.

Howie,
I have to apologize. Your directions were perfect. I was the problem in this equation. I had the everything reversed. Thanks so much for your help.
