Subject: adding a siren to factory alarm?
Date Posted: July 13, 2011 at 9:56 PM

i was wondering if there was any way i could possibly wire in an aftermarket alarm siren into my factory alarm on '07 durango? i basically want to try and do away with the horn honk i get now when i arm it. it  already has the factory remote start and all which is why i didnt want to go out and buy/install a whole new system. and it will also honk the horn twice when i remote start it, which id like to change too. any ideas?

cool, thx for leading me in the right direction. any ideas on adding a siren as mentioned?

A relay, cut the wire that now goes to the horn. Horn wire to terminal 87, vehicle side of horn wire to terminal 30. Siren power wire to terminal 87A. Ground to terminal 85. Switched power to terminal 86. When your truck is powered up, the horn will blow. When the ignition is off, the siren will sound.

You can not get the dealership to disable horn honk if you want to use the above.

ok great, so it is possible to do then. i figured on the horn wire being cut, id have no horn at all once i put the siren in place. so now my question is, you say when the truck ignition off, the siren will be the only thing(chirp and no horn)? also, would you happen to have any wiring info on this by chance? thx in advance.

Yes, when the key is off the only chirp you will hear is the siren.  The only drawback is, if you are sitting in your truck with the key off, and press your horn, you will only hear the siren.

Wiring info:  Find the horn, there is going to be only one wire going to it,  that is the wire you cut.

Is there a cigarette lighter that gets hot only when the key is on?  If so, the center wire of that socket will be a good place to get switched power.

ok thanx for your input. one other thing. i have an LED scanner from a previous alarm. they way i have it wired in now is when the ignition is off, its on and when ignition on its off. any way you can think of that it will only come on when i actually arm the vehicle? if i remember right, on the old truck, it was hooked up to a negative out when armed.

The only way to make that happen is going to be with a magnet mounted to your lock mechanism and a reed switch mounted to the car.  You will have to mount the switch so it only makes contact when the vehicle is locked.  That is the best I can do for you.

hmmm, no idea on how to go about doing that mod?

Remove a door panel and see if there is a linkage or some part that moves wen the door is locked and unlocked. You have to attach a magnet to that part of the mechanism. Then you will need to attach a magnetic alarm switch or reed switch so that it is activated by the magnet when the door is locked.

oh ok, then where would i hook up the led scanner at?

Power the scanner with constant power.  Connect the scanner ground wire to the Normally Open contact of the switch.  Ground the common connection of the switch.

doesnt sound to hard. can it be just one door or all 4? im assuming just one will do it.

1 will do. Whenever the doors are locked the Scanner will flash. You may want to use a relay to break the power connection when the ignition is on. If not it will illuminate while driving if you have the doors locked.

Your Scanner probably has 3 connections, power ground and the ground trigger wire. Use a relay 30 to the trigger wire of the scanner. 87A to the wire of the switch. 85 to ground. 86 to Ignition. when the key is on, it will remove ground from the trigger wire.

actually the scanner is from plasmaglow(night rider hood scoop type). it only has a positive and a ground wire(just 2 wires). also, that link with the picture you posted, thats all i will need is the 2 magnetic pieces....mount the one side onto the mechanism and the other will be stationary(mounted to car)?

oh yea, and the truck has auto lock doors once you hit 10-15 mph so id definately want a relay in there somehow so it doesnt flash while driving like you stated.....

well i tried putting in the relay for the siren mod. all it does now is blow the horn constantly. i tried reversing the connections going to the horn wire on both. it doesnt constantly blow that way but the siren will not make any sound at all?

Did you use the wire that went to the horn? (The horn under the hood, not the horn switch at the steering wheel)  let me check my instructions, there should be nothing that would make the horn honk constantly, unless this only happens when the key is on and you connected the ignition wire to 30 instead of 86.

Instructions look fine.  https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp~TID~127901~PN~0~TPN~1#634220

i cut the dark GREEN/ violet stripe(horn) wire at steering column. hooked 87 to horn wire(that runs out to a harness), hooked 30 to horn wire(that runs into steering wheel), 86 switched power(ignition-pink/gray), 85 ground, 87A to siren positive lead.....this made the horn honk constantly. so i then reversed the 87 and 30 pins(horn wires) and it didnt honk steadily. when ign was off it didnt honk and when on it would honk. however, when i hit the lock on remote all i get is horn honk and no siren at all.

To use the instructions I gave, you need to find the horn.  There will only be one wire going to it.  Cut that wire.  Connect the horn to terminal 87 of the relay.  Connect the truck end of the wire to terminal 30.  Connect your siren power wire to terminal 87A.

oh i just now got that about having to use the wires under the hood. i looked and i see 2 horns side by side. im assuming a low and a high? anyways, both wires going to each look to be GREEN/ pink stripe and bluish gray/pink stripe. which to cut and do i need to do both horns?

Posted By: i am an idiot
Date Posted: July 17, 2011 at 5:45 PM
If you can not trace the wire back to where the 2 horn wires join each other, then yes you will need to do each horn.  You only have to power the siren from one relay.

yea i figured. i hardly have enough room to look for any wires going up to the horns. starting to think of saying the heck with it lol. any idea what the wire color would be? how do i link the 2 relays together?

Posted By: i am an idiot
Date Posted: July 17, 2011 at 8:25 PM
No idea of the color.  Just follow the instructions for each horn.  You only need to power the siren with one or the other relays.

well now another problem arose. i install an HID headlight kit earlier today. now that LED scanner which i had working per your instructions stays on constantly....almost like its stuck shut/open. when i flick/tap it with my fingers it almost goes out but stays on? i also believe i need to wire in little resistors in the HID positive and negative leads cuz i have flickering. could this be anything to do with the scanner staying constant?

Where did you get power for the scanner?

Posted By: fosgate24360
Date Posted: July 18, 2011 at 12:07 AM

5 pin relay:

86 accessory/ignition(only power when ignition is on/run)

85 ground

30 constant power(ran out to direct off battery)

87A   LED positive wire

LED negative wire to a ground

like i said, it was working great until earlier today when i was messing around with that horn mod and HID kit install.

If it is staying on all the time, 86 has to have constant power applied. Where did you get power from?

When you installed the lights, did you blow or move any fuses?

Posted By: fosgate24360
Date Posted: July 18, 2011 at 7:51 AM
no, didnt blow any fuses or move any. ill double check the relay but im 99% sure 30 is getting constant power because thats the one i ran a wire out to the battery for positive.

You lost either ground or switched power to the relay.

Posted By: fosgate24360
Date Posted: July 18, 2011 at 10:56 AM
its all still hooked up the way it was from the start. maybe its the relay(bad)?

Posted By: i am an idiot
Date Posted: July 18, 2011 at 2:49 PM
You need to use a volt meter to verify that you have switched power on 86 and ground on 85. There is no way to find this out without a meter.

Put in new relay still stays on constant. only other thing i did was put in an optima battery instead of original. mounted the factory pos and neg wires to side posts. the hid kit and the constant wire(pin 30 on relay for scanner) to top mount pos post. could any of that be a culprit?

would an ignition wire be the same as a switched power wire or no? and to answer your question from earlier, no i dont have a cig lighter in truck. just a power adapter for a cell phone charger or whatever. it only has 2 wires on the back of the plug. i believe the one is switched since it will only work(power on) with ignition run/acc. i unhooked the 86 pin(i have on ignition wire at steering column) and the scanner will stay on with or without that connection(key on or off too)  so im guessing thats the problem area.

Switched power is a power source that is controlled by the ignition switch. Be it, an Ignition, or an Accessory source. If the relay is missing power on 86 or ground on 85, the scanner will be on all the time. When switched power and ground is applied to the relay, the connection between 30 and 87 will open, this causing the light to go out. If this is not happening, you are missing one or the other. You will need a volt meter to test this.

ok, got the scanner working right again. i just tapped into that power adaptor i mentioned before and all works great. now i need to get back to the magnetic /reed switch on the door as i got a magnetic switch today. it has 2 wires on the one piece. i wondering what is the correct way to wire the switch into a relay like you mentioned so that the scanner will come on only when the doors are locked but not while driving after i hit 15 mph and they auto lock?

hmmm, not sure. i just saw one on ebay from a seller i previously purchased things from but the listing doesnt say anything about open or closed switch.

If you get it and it has only the 2 wires and no other connections, it is a Normally open switch.  Normally open as in in away from the magnet it will have no continuity between the 2 wires.  When the magnet comes close to the switch it will then allow current to flow.

You will have to position it so that when the door is locked, the magnet is near the switch.  Do yourself a favor and mount the switch so it is stationary.  Mount the magnet to the moving part.  You will have to get the wires out of the door and into the cabin.  Use the 2 wires to interrupt power or ground on the scanner.

yea it only has 2 wires onthe one side. so will i need a relay in this too as far as it locking the doors when i drive and hit 15 mph? i dont need it to be scanning while driving and get pulledover.

Posted By: i am an idiot
Date Posted: July 21, 2011 at 3:00 AM
I thought you already had the relay. You only need the one. Just use the 2 wires of the switch to make the circuit when the door is locked.

Don't you have it working anytime the key is in the off position? if so, leave it like that and extend the 2 wires to the cabin, ground one of the wires, and ground the scanner to the other wire.

yea its still on a relay now. i wasnt sure if id have to rearrange the wires different on the relay to make all this work. so the only wire ill need to change is the ground wire of the scanner(which is grounded to chasis) to one end of the switch?

Posted By: i am an idiot
Date Posted: July 21, 2011 at 8:41 AM
Correct. Ground one of the switch wires, and connect the ground wire from the scanner to the other wire of the switch.

heyi just wanted to give a big thank you for all the input on the scanner/mag switch wiring. works great as fro following your directions. only hard part was finding what to mount the non wire side of the switch to....ended up putting it on the actual door lck post(right below/underneath the door molding shell). only way i could do it was use a few zip ties to wrap around it and secure it snug as i could not gain access to any other parts. next ill try and tackle the horn/siren issue again in the next week or two. i also have those little uits from DEI that wind up windows with arm and i could vent/put them down with my old alarm. any way on getting tose in there somehow? atleast to wind up windows when pressing arm on remote...not concerned with the venting/putting down, if can be done great. im thinking no because i dont have an aux channel on the factory remote key fob. if its do-able with the factory alarm, might also get one for the sunroof since i have a bad habit of leaving it open on occassion. thx in advance.

I do not think it blows the horn at unlock.  Can you confirm that?  If you want that to happen, we can make it happen.  Doesn't it flash the parking lights twice at unlock?

Arm it and pay close attention to the timing of the light flash along with the chirp.  Do they happen at the same time?

Posted By: fosgate24360
Date Posted: July 31, 2011 at 3:48 PM
ah yes you are correct, it did/does not blow horn at unlock. im so used to my old chirp once-lock and chirp twice-unlock.....sorry wasnt thinking. id like to have it chirp twice at unlock. to answer your question/s, yes the lights will flash twice at unlock and when i arm it, the chirp is the same time as the single light flash.  thx again for all your replies.

Posted By: i am an idiot

You will have to use a relay to make the siren chirp when the lights flash.  It may take another relay to break this circuit when the ignition is on.  We may be able to use the relay you already have that switches to siren when the ignition is off.  I will need to go back and see how we did that.

There may be issues with lights on with ignition off.  You may need to install a switch in the cabin so you can disable this when the key is off and the lights are on.

well if im going to need to flip a switch each time to get this to chirp that way, im not going to worry with it. to much of a hassle to me sorry. and i did have to power both those relays on the horn mod/siren chirp when arm. if i powered only one relay, i could only get either the high note horn sound or the low note horn sound....both sounded odd so thats why i did both. which horn sounds the same as it did before i started all this.

You will need the switch only if you want to turn on your lights without having the key on.  If you do not see yourself turning the lights on while sitting in the car without the ignition turned on, then it will not be a problem.

oh i gotcha, i misunderstood. i dont sit with the ignition off and lights on anyways due to having HID kit installed.
