I am going to do a remote starter (Viper 4103) install for my uncle who has a 1999 volvo v70 .. the accessory line says the polarity has to be 5 wire. also it says key sense is required and furthermore the head light wire is a 5 wire system as well ... can someone help me with explaining what a 5 wire system is and how would i go about hooking up the accessory and parking lights up. I got the wire information from Direct Wire 2.0 and its all the same colors as here expect for the Acc and Park Lights it says the voltage is 5 wire not the same as here. I just want no surprises and i doubt this car needs a bypass but i may be mistaken.
THANK YOU
Much Appreciated.
A few things.
1. The car does have a transponder(chip) key and you will need a bypass. Only downside is that the only way to do it is with a 556U or something similar and your uncle will have to either give up a key or go to Volvo to get an extra key made (to be put into the 556U).
2. Have you purchased the 4103 yet? If not you may want to look at a Viper 5101, Python 1401, or Clifford 1.2 (all are exactly the same, just diff brand names. same manufacturer, and about the same price). These models have "5wire" or "isolation" relays built into them for both parking lights and the Accesory wire. The 4103 does not have either built in and therefore you would need a few relays. You will still need a relay for the keysense no matter which system you use.
3. A 5 wire relay breaks a circuit and supplies current to only one side of the circuit. Its usually used to prevent feedback to a switch of some type. In your case the Ignition and light switches. It is definitely a necessary part of this install.
wow thanks .. so if i purchase the 5101 how would i wire these up ... do i wire the acc and headlights up?
sorry my last post looked a little off ... how do i wire the parking light and acc.
On Volvos, for some crazy reason the parking lights and headlights come on with ignition no matter what position you leave the light switch in. Seriously, I never even hook up parking lights on these cars....keep the installation as simple as possible. Try it for yourself---go outside in daylight, start the car with the key, and I'm pretty sure all the lights will be already on.
As for how to wire the 5-wire relay? Look here:

See the first one, normally closed starter kill relay? It's similar to that.
---CUT CAR'S ACCESSORY WIRE IN HALF---
85: negative ignition-out from remote start (DEI small pink or small blue)
86: car ignition
87: no connection
87a: "key side" of the wire you cut
30: "car side" of the wire you cut, AND accessory output (orange) from remote starter
so i have an issue now i hooked up the accessory wire as you told me and this is what happened when therelay was plugged all the dash lights stayed on and the car never stopped beeping. So i unplugged the relay and everything worked out fine. That is until i noticed the cars heater wasnt blowing when i remote started the car and the radio doesnt turn on either. what did i do wrong?
Do you have an accessory connection at all from the starter? Did you ever reconnect the accessory wire (since it was cut for the relay). I would check your connections on the relay and make sure everything was correct.
