Hi all,

Great site. I just installed my first remote starter based off what I read on the posts on this site (great site!).

I am having a problem however.. after install the truck locks/unlocks but will not start. When I hit the start button on the 2 way remote it errors right away. I did hear clicking sound from the 5501 box.

How I wired it is below. Any suggestions on where to look? any help is greatly appreciated!!

Your ground while running wire needs to be connected to the DBALL, but that is not why you are not getting crank. Have you programmed your tach wire. Sounds like your tach has not been programmed.

I am installing per the DBALL instructions: https://www.xpresskit.com/VehicleCompatibility.aspx?p=null&year=2003&make=Chevrolet&model=Silverado&ps=1&s=0&c=0

Its telling me I only need to wire the violet / YELLOW wire on the DBALL to the violet wire on the OBDII.

Which wire is the ground while running?  I have not programmed my tach. Looks like I have more reseach to find out how to do that! :)

Thanks for the reply!

Well i guess I need to ask if you are running in D2D mode. which I now assume you are. If you are then you need to follow the instructions from the remote start to program you tach. Also, you did get the DBALL flashed with the correct firmware? And you did program it to the vehicle. With no crank at all though, it is going to be a tach learn issue right now.

did you change the manual mode to auto trans mode?  If you are getting 7 flashes of the parking lights, that is your problem.  Also, is the neutral safety switch plugged in and turned to on?

Hi guys,

I am in D2D mode

I programmed the DBALL with the FW 401.GM4 v1.03 (I believe this is correct for my truck)

I just tried the remote start tach learn:
1. Start the vehicle with the key.
2. Within 5 seconds, press and hold the Valet/Program switch.
3. After 3 seconds the LED will light constant when the tach signal is learned.
4. Release the Valet/Program switch.

I cannot get the LED to come on when holding the valet button.

The LED is flashing when I close all doors and lock the truck via the remote

I have not changed to auto trans mode (is default manual?). the truck is an automatic. The neutral safety switch  wire is currently tied to ground. I will try setting the system to automatic trans.

You are not getting the tach to program probably because the DB-ALL is very unreliable with tach. Try running the violet/white wire to the actual tach wire on the vehicle and try again. Although with that you may need to change all your DB-ALL wiring to w2w (more reliable anyways). Make sure you are not getting a ground signal through your hood pin. I have had it happen in the past where the place I mounted the hood pin wasn't quite in the right spot and the hood wasn't ever touching the pin to close it. So check that input to make sure it does not have a ground signal.

Guys, thanks for all the help.. still working on it (its cold out there!!)  I am trying to put the unit into "automatic mode" but having a problem with the DEI instructions? (is it me or are they confusing?) Here they are cut-pasted out of the manual. My problem is how to I "lock in" my setting? you will notice the last step does not make sense.  Also if this doesnt work, sounds like I should move to W2W method? all agree this is better? sounds like my tach learn is probably the problem here.

1. Ignition. Turn the ignition on, then off.

2. Select a Menu. Press and HOLD the Valet/Program switch. (The Valet/Program switch must beplugged into the blue port.) After three seconds the LED flashes and the horn honks one-time, indicating entry to the Basic Features Menu. If this is the menuyou want, release the button and go on to Step 3.If the button is not released, the program jumps to the nextmenu and the horn honks twice. There are three possiblemenus. Select the menu you want, then release the Valet/Program switch.

3. Select a Feature. Press and release the Valet/Program switch the number of times correspondingto the feature you wish to change. For example, toaccess the third feature, press and release 3 times. Then press the button once more and HOLD it. The horn honks the number of times equal to the featureyou have accessed. You can now release theValet/program switch.

4. Program the Feature. You can toggle the feature onand off using the remote control. Press the button tolock the system to select options in ascending order.Press the button that unlocks the system, to selectoptions in descending order.Press the Remote Start button to reset a feature tothe factory default.

5. After selecting the feature you want, release the Valet/ program switch.   (how do I release it if I wasn't holding it since instruction #3 told me to release it??.. how do I lock in my setting? if I let it timeout will it take the setting?)

normally it will time out after a certain amount of time. Otherwise you can cycle the ignition again to lock in the settings.

Did you try it with the key in the ignition? If not, give that a shot. Also check you hood pin switch input to make sure it is being depressed correctly and that you don't have a short to ground somewhere along the line. What exactly is it doing when you try to start it? Is the ignition coming on and just not cranking or is it not doing anything at all?

I just re-read the original post and you said that it is erroring right away which means it is probably related to a shutdown input and not a bypass issue. Check through all of the shut down inputs and make sure they are getting the correct signal;

Brake wire - 12v ONLY with the brake depressed
Hood Pin - ground only when the hood is opened
Neutral Safety input - straight ground at all times

And also check to make sure you are in automatic mode in the programming.

I checked the hood pin and its working as expected, 0V when open and disconnected the hood switch for now and checked its not at 0V.

The starter error code I am getting now is 8 parking light flashes:  Neutral safety wire has no ground or the neutral safety switch is Off.

I checked the Neutral saftey wire and it has a solid connection to ground (checked with DVM)

Any ideas before I burn this truck :)

I figured it out!

The valet switch that came with the unit doesnt work!  I can switch it on or off and the the two wires are not connected together!! (what are the chances of that??). I shorted them together for now and the truck starts!!! Thanks guys!!

So my issues were

1) The Tach from D2D didnt work.. I am still using D2D but pulled the tack out from the DB-ALL to the 5501 and that worked

2) The valet switch that came with the remote did not work  (this was a re-furbished unit.. I wonder if this is why it was returned in the first place?)

One other thing I noticed.. the truck started fine and shuts down, then it starts again and has been running about 5 mins? any idea what would cause it to shut down?

Time to head back out in the cold and button up the unit and put the hood pin back in circuit!

you guys are great!

After thinking about the issue some more.. maybe the tach from the DBALL is a bad idea.. as what was mentioned earlier.. maybe I should just wire the remote starter tach to the white truck tach behind the cluster.. I am going to try that.

Yea, I would hardwire the tach. I've never had a good reliable tach signal from the DB-ALL bypasses. You may have to change it to W2W though so that it doesn't keep programming the tach off the DB-ALL. Worse comes to worse you can temporarily set it to voltage sensing until it warms up enough to change it to w2w. You should be ok with Voltage sensing on that vehicle... but once you get the chance, I would change whatever needed to use a good tach signal for long term reliability.

Just in case anyone else runs into the same issues I did.. I am still using D2D but wired the tach off the back of the cluster. I RS the truck about 10 times, worked every time!!

thanks all!!!
