Back when I did this for a living I remember we cycled the locks a certain way to turn off the GEM function so we didn't have to go through the door boot to hook up the wake up circuit when doing remote starts. I can't find the instructions online. What are the steps? Thanks.

Should be on this site, Downloads/Manuals section under DEI techtips.

No luck. I found a few of your wiring posts, but still nothing for shutting off any Ford GEM.

What do you mean shut off the gem ?   Are you talking about waking it up after it goes to sleep so the locks will work with you're aftermarket remote ?

No. I mean actually turning the GEM off so it no longer goes to sleep. It was much simpler than going into the door for the DEI 1094. I think you turn the key on with the door open and cycle the door locks a certain number of times to turn the GEM off.

Yeah, you can turn off the "sleepy" locks. Its in the owners manual of the car. If there isn't an owners manual in the glove box, you can look up the manual on ford.com. The manuals are under "owners" or something like that...
On a side note, Sometimes following the owners manual and turning off the "sleepy" locks, didn't always work, and they continued to fall asleep. If they are still falling asleep, you pulse the drivers door pin and unlock wire at the same time(diode isolate) and set your unit for double pulse unlock.

Okay, thanks. If that is the case I am not looking up the correct terms. I tried the owners manual first thing today, and just looked up the one online now, but still can't find the steps.

Pulse your ignition wire with unlock. Make sure to diode isolate the unlock wire. Some units have this as a programming option. I do this all the time. This diagram is for negative door locks. Make sure to use a DMM and test your wiring.

You didn't mention what model car you are working with, but I just went to fords site and downloaded the 2004 ford taurus owners manual. under locks and security it had these directions:

Power door lock disable feature (if equipped)
The UNLOCK feature on your power door locks will not work from
inside the vehicle when:
• the ignition has been turned to the 3 (OFF) position, and
• 20 seconds elapse after all vehicle doors are closed and locked using the remote entry transmitter, the keyless entry pad, or the power door lock control (while the accompanying door is open).
The UNLOCK feature will work again after:
• a door has become ajar,
• the ignition is turned to the 4 (ON) position, or
• using the UNLOCK control on your remote entry transmitter or
unlocking via the keyless entry keypad.

Deactivating/activating power door lock disable feature
You must complete Steps 1-7 within 30 seconds or the procedure will
have to be repeated. If the procedure needs to be repeated, you must
wait 30 seconds.
1. Turn the ignition key to the 4 (ON) position.
2. Press the power door unlock control three times.
3. Turn the ignition key from the 4 (ON) to the 3 (OFF) position.
4. Press the power door unlock control three times.
5. Turn the ignition back to the 4 (ON) position. The horn will chirp.
6. Press the unlock control, then press the lock control. Note: The horn will chirp twice if autolock was deactivated or chirp twice then honk (two short and one long chirp) if autolock was activated.
7. Press the power door unlock control and then the lock control again
in order to toggle the autolock/relock states.
8. Turn the ignition to the 3 (OFF) position. The horn will chirp once to confirm the procedure is complete.

This may or may not be the procedure on all fords, look it up in the specific model's owners manual.

2003 Explorer Sport Trac.
I'll have to try those steps, it sounds familiar.
Thanks.

Ref: pts 760 diagram, thanks for posting, but as a precaution, where you split the unlock wire, I'd also diode the branch to the relay.

No luck. Those were not the steps for a Sport Trac. I'll keep searching, I'm in no hurry to install it anyway.

Thanks for catching that, that totally slipped my mind

8 diodes and 4 10k ohm resistors will fix all your problems no need to turn of the gem

Actually, if you use the diodes as in DEI 1076 you won't need the resistors.

I tried the 1076 setup it didn't work for me. I had weird readings still and the gem (vsm in my case) would cause false alarms when it went to battery save mode. I had to go by DEI 1453 with resistors and making them a (+) trigger for it to work.
