I believe most of them have a horizontal recommendation from Compustar.  Some even recommend horizontal on the drivers side.  I have actually found, on certain cars, horizontal in the center of the windshield and on some AM units, vertical in the center works best ( longest range and all directions ).    Probably have to temporarily tape it in place and test ( Grandson and cell phone works well  posted_image  ).

Centre or OPPOSITE to driver, who needs another line of sight distraction?
In practice with one way systems (physically smaller) depending on either heated or metallic windscreens you won't loose much if anything buried in the inst. panel or behind the "A" pillar trim.
Heck, on Porsche 911 and MR-2 I go for the rear side quarter window.

Distractions?  This is America!  There's plenty of sight room once you put down the cell phone or newspaper...   posted_image

And don't forget on Skype or a movie on the cell phone whilst eating a corned beef sandwich and negotiating a roundabout.
Thank the stars for auto-boxes, enables me to talk, navigate eat and drink at once.
But still nothing in my line of sight.

I stuck mine under the plastic flat dash panel in my Lincoln. Seems to still have good range there (I can start it from almost two blocks away at times still. depending on what is in the way!)

I really don't like the looks of most RS antenna, so hide them when I can :)
