Hey guys, I'm trying to install a Viper 5101 in a 98 Lumina, and, well, I'm a complete noob at this, so please pardon my questions. I wanted to test the unit before I installed it, so I hooked the ground and hot leads to the battery, but the unit doesn't seem to be doing anything. There doesn't appear to be an LED on the unit itself, so I plugged in the Valet switch/LED to see if it was getting power, and nothing. I tried testing for current at both the + and - wires for the door locks while pressing the remote lock/unlock buttons, and still I get nothing.
Am I missing something here, or is this unit dead? Is there anything else I can try?

I would suggest checking the install guide first for the necessary wiring that would allow the remote starter to operate even if you are just testing it.

You should be able to bench test it by connecting the red fused wire from the H1 harness and the Black ground from the same harness. Than should give you power to the brain and should respond to the remote. H1/2 and H1/5 wires. ------------- When all else fails, Read the Instructions

Yeah, that's what I'm doing - connecting the hot and ground leads to the battery and testing the output of the module.
But when I press the door lock/unlock button on the remote with the unit receiving power, I'm not seeing a signal coming out of either the blue or green wire on the door lock/unlock harness when pressing the locking or unlocking buttons. I'm checking for a signal between those wires and ground, by the way.
I tried resetting the remote and reprogramming it to the module, but the instructions in the installation manual leave me confused as to just how to to do this. Specifically, step #3 seems to be a dead end:
1. Hold the button on the remote until the transmit LED lights solid (approximately 10 seconds).
2. Press and hold the AUX button until the remote LED blinks three times, and the amber Transmit LED lights up.
3. Next enter the remote control learn routine and choose the function for “auto learn configuration” listed on the program grid.
I don't see anything labeled 'program grid' anywhere in the installation manual, and in the grids that follow those instructions, I don't see anything labeled 'remote programming' or anything similar in either the installation manual or the owner's manual, so I don't know how to proceed at step 3.
So I suppose a better question is this: how do I reprogram the remote to the module in this situation?
And should the LED in the control center be lit when the module is receiving power? I get nothing out of mine - not so much as a flicker.

Well you won't because they are ground outputs.
Probably fried the units or managed to unpair the remotes.
You need ignition connected and green door trigger to ground to program assuming alarm function, if not at least ignition.
You should have simply gone ahead with install and not tried a bench test without full knowledge.
Leave that to the pros.
The LED will light on arming.
------------- Amateurs assume, don't test and have problems; pros test first. I am not a free install service.
Read the installation manual, do a search here or online for your vehicle wiring before posting.

Not sure what instruction you are reading, First step press and hold the F button, Second step is the remote start button, not the AUX.
The auto learn configuration involves turning the key to on and the pressing the button on the antenna (control center) to enter one of the four items available. Item 1 is for auto learn. These are on pages 36, 37, and 38 of the install manual. This can be done on the bench. You will have to apply 12 volts to the Pink wire on the Heavy gauge Ignition 1. It will work if done properly. Might take a few attempts. ------------- When all else fails, Read the Instructions

F button/remote start is what I meant, don't know why I typed what I did.
Thanks for that information, I'll give it a shot tomorrow.

To program or pair remotes on the bench you will need a jumper wire with a alligator clip on one end to simplify the process.
Connect Red H1/2 , and Violet H1/6 to +12v , and jumper lead to (+)power also and Black H1/5 to ground. (Note H1/6 not needed for Remote start keyless only units.)
Then put remote into pair mode. (For adding remotes only not needed to change settings with a remote that is already paired.)
Connect the jumper to the Pink H3/1.
Then press the program button 1 time release and then hold to program (Pair) remotes.
Hit the the lock button on the remote to be paired.
To delete all remotes is same as above except you press the program button 2 times release and then hold and hit lock button on remote that is already paired. (no remote pairing mode needed to change settings only to add remotes), and all remotes should be deleted.
