viper 4704v anti grind

Sorry if this is a stupid question. The Viper 4704V claims to have an anti-grind relay (Menu 3, option 13). Normally the starter wire is cut, and connected to the Viper's PURPLE / Green wires.

But the 4704V lacks the green wire. It says to wire the purple (violet) wire to the starter wire:

H3/1 PINK (+) IGNITION 1 INPUT/OUTPUT
H3/2 RED / WHITE +12V FUSED (30A) IGNITION 2/FLEX RELAY INPUT
H3/3 ORANGE (+) ACCESSORY OUTPUT
H3/4 VIOLET (+) STARTER OUTPUT
H3/5 RED +12V FUSED (30A) IGNITION 1 INPUT
H3/6 PINK/WHITE IGNITION 2/FLEX RELAY OUTPUT
H3/7 PINK/BLACK FLEX RELAY INPUT 87a (IF REQUIRED) OF FLEX RELAY
H3/8 RED / BLACK +12V FUSED (30A) ACCESSORY/STARTER INPUT

How is anti-grind possible with this setup?

The 5704 and 4704 are identical except the 4704 is a remote start while the 5704 adds alarm features.

Thanks Howie -- with the 5704 it's not needed, since you cut the starter wire and attach Violet to the car side, and Green to the key side.

What's confusing about the 4704 is that it lacks the green wire, yet claims to have the onboard relay. From the 4704 manual:

13. Anti-grind Output
1. On: the high current starter relay will be activated during remote start as anti-grind protection.
2. Off: the high current starter relay will not be activated during remote start, no anti-grind protection is available.


This is why I'm scratching my head. Like the 5704, it claims to have the relay built-in. But unlike the 5704, the heavy-gauge harness has 8 wires instead of 10, and no green wire.

Am I making any sense?

it probably has something to do with the flex relay and setting it to act a certain way. if not then it may just be a typo. in any case you can wire your own anti-grind relay using the ground while running wire to activate a standard starter kill relay, just make sure you install the wires on the keyside of the starter output of the remote start or else the remote start will not crank.

I think I know the answer.
5702, R/S and security, therefore it's internal relay is anti-grind AND STARTER CUT, thus green and violet.
4704, R/S only thus the violet is equivalent to the last relay diagram but all you have is the output from 30 (violet) external and no starter cut.
Green would be equivalent to 87a in that diagram.
Not misleading, no typos, just as usual for DEI, the installer has to figure it out.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll add a relay for anti-grind if the vehicle needs it. Was hoping to simply snip and solder 2 wires but the 4704 doesn't seem to support it.

Not needed, just go to menu 3 level 13.

I see that feature Howie, but the starter wire in the car isn't cut with the 4704. The Violet/Purple "+ Starter Output" is simply soldered to it. So how does it prevent a key from grinding the starter?

Would you be kind enough to explain how that works? With higher level Viper models, you cut the car starter wire. Then one Viper wire to the key side, and one Viper wire to the starter side. So my brain can picture what the onboard relay is doing to prevent grinding.

With the 4704, there's nothing electrically to stop the key from grinding the starter, since the 4704's wire is spliced into the car starter wire, and cannot prevent current from travelling further down it....

Just guesswork but picture that relay diagram. As I said its internal and by programming you configure it as either 87 or 87a connected.
Try Googling or searching this site for "anti-grind" relays, it might give you a better in-sight than the one I've just given you.
