Subject: avital remote start 4103 rear defogger

I bought a 2013 Kia Forte and had an Avital 4103 Remote start installed in my car by the dealership (one of those freebie things I got because I paid too much for the car). Now that winter has come upon us in using the remote start I noticed that I couldn't get the rear defrost function to work. I took it to the dealer and this is what I'm being told by the "salesperson". He claims that he spoke to his mechanic and that function (he called it an option) wasn't installed because it is known to make the starter fail and possibly the wiring harness in which if it did I would have to pay for it. he also stated that if I wanted that "option" installed they would charge me $75.00. I let him know that as far as I could see in the owner booklet for the remote start that the rear defogger was a "feature" and not an option and that if this made the starter fail in any way then Kia shouldn't be putting them in their cars and that if I did want the "feature" installed that I didn't think I should have to pay for something that should have been hooked up to begin with. Furthermore in reading the booklet that I didn't discuss with the salesman I also read that there should have been a switch installed to turn the remote start off completely (a toggle switch). That wasn't installed either. My question is: Is the rear defogger an "option" or a "feature"? Has anyone ever heard of this option/feature making the starter fail or messing up any wiring? and lastly should the toggle switch have been installed as well? Before I escalate this to a higher power at Kia I wondered if anyone on this forum could answer these questions for me. Help????

The Avital 4103 is a remote start with keyless entry system.  As such, it is typically considered an extra cost option to have the rear defrost control added as a function on the system.  I would charge extra for it as do most installers I know.

Thanks Kreg for the quick reply. Do you know if hooking that option up would have a negative effect on the starter or the wiring as he indicated to me that it would or does it sound to you like they just don't really want to hook it up?

2X with Kreg.

While it is built into the remote starter unit, it is something that is not part of a basic install of a remote start system. 75 bucks is a fair price to connect the rear window defrost. Have it done, it is a real nice option in the winter. I have it on both of my cars, and the people I ask if they want it connected love it and were glad to have it done.

I agree, it sounds like they just don't want to connect it. I have never seen any negative effect on the remote starters I have installed.

As Mr. Smoke says...
Done correctly, the Rear Defrost should not have a negative impact on the Avital or the car.  I have not
done a 2013 Forte to be able to test and be positive, but most Hyundai / KIA's are pretty straight forward,
using a low current (-) pulse to turn on the Defroster.  Here is some info from Omega :
Rear Defrost    BROWN / ORANGE (-)      BEHIND A/C CONTROLS WHITE 26 PIN CONN, PIN 25 OR 26
     * Pin location dependent upon A/C control type. With manual controls pin 25, with automatic controls pin 26.
As such, no extra parts are required ( i.e. relay ) and a simple wire connection and Avital programming is all that
is necessary.

Thanks Smoke and Kreg. I do believe I will be having them install that feature as it doesn't really do much good in Missouri's weather to have only the windshield defrosted.
How about that toggle switch, is this also something that is an extra cost to have installed, or even something that I need?

IMO you dont need toggle switch, i very rarely install them only if the customer asks for it

Toggle switch? A toss up.  In my cars that have it, came with the Viper 5301 in my cars, I have never used them in the six years I have had them.  My opinion about them.

If the rear defog is a pulsed feed at the AC controls then you should have been asked if you wanted it, it would have taken them at most 10 minutes to include it with no parts!
If pulsed it probably turns off after about 10 minutes anyway and on a new car I wouldn't worry about negative effect on the car, NO difference to the remote starts.
As for that switch, I got sick of having to extend the wiring so I could mount them where the customers wanted them, now I simply cut and solder join the leads, what's the point of it anyway?

Amateurs assume, don't test and have problems; pros test first. I am not a free install service.
Read the installation manual, do a search here or online for your vehicle wiring before posting.
