I installed a remote start alarm (Varad VS-702) Remote start is fine, install the key turn ignition on then off and the vehicle still runs. I can shut the vehicle down by the remote or pressing the brake pedal. Remote is an extra step I don't care for and pressing the brake makes the siren chirp and the talking remote say's "Remote start fail". How do most remote start systems switch over operation? Thanks.

By "switch-over" I'm assuming you mean "key-take-over".
The typical remote start system uses the Brake Pedal input to switch over. Sequence would be :
1. Remote start vehicle.
2. Insert ignition key and turn to ON.
3. Depress Brake pedal.
At this point the R/S system will drop out ( turn off power to all ignition outputs ), allowing the vehicle to continue to run under
it's own ignition key powered circuits. As you know, if you depress the Brake pedal without the ignition key inserted and turned
to ON, the R/S system will shut down ( drop power to ignition outputs ) and the engine will stop.

Anyway, with the vehicle running under a remote start, simply inserting the key, turning to ON and then back to OFF will do
nothing to the R/S system. It is only monitoring the Brake Pedal, the Hood Pin and the R/S's Fob's for take-over / shutdown.
There are exceptions, like systems that monitor the Tach signal for an over-rev condition, certain PTS vehicles that shutdown
when a door is opened, etc.

If I understand correctly, this is normal operation.

When you remote start the car, the remote start will stay active until something is triggered. If you remote start and put the key in the ON position, this will not shut down the remote start.

If you remote start, then put the key in the ON position, as soon as you put your foot on the brake to shift gears, the remote start will shut off and the key ignition will take over. When you park, the car should shut down with the key.

Remote start systems have no way of knowing whether the key is in the ignition cylinder. It just knows to shut down by command, which are your triggers that kreg357 listed.
