2006 Lexus RX 400h, Python 4104P, dball2, Engine checking (OFF). On 1st remote start when car has sat locked vehicle runs for approx. 30 sec and shuts off regardless of if hybrid is active or engine running. No error codes/flashed given by module. Upon 2nd remote start car will run for programmed time(12min) hybrid and/or engine running. Have rechecked wiring, every connection is soldered and has heat shrink or double electrical taped. Only thing I can think of is dball2 is connected d2d? Thinking of switching to w2w. Also first time I remote started I hadn't turned engine checking off yet so maybe it learned a virtual tach signal? Is there anything else I'm not thinking of that could cause this? Searching has not yielded and useful results. Thanks in advance!

the data port is set for a bitwriter. Power off the brain, disconnect the d2d cable to the bypass, ground your activation input wire and turn the unit back on. it will force switch the port to d2d.

from directechs:

These units are set in ESP2 mode by default. To change to D2D protocol, perform the following steps:
1. Verify system is powered down (main 12V(+) and ground are disconnected)
2. Ground the WHITE/ Blue Activation input and power the system up (connect 12V(+) and ground)
3. The LED will flash for 5 seconds to confirm protocol change from ESP2 to D2D

In order to change the system from D2D to ESP2, repeat the above procedure, the LED will illuminate steady
(instead of flashing) to confirm change back to ESP2 was successful

I had this problem on a 2010 Tacoma.

Tried to reflash using the latest firmware, checked my connections, etc. to no avail.

I fixed it by reflashing the DBALL2, but removed all the features that the car didn't have (i.e. the checkboxes during flashing). The truck didn't have power windows, a trunk, etc. so I removed those options. Took me about 3 hours of troubleshooting!

I would try this if switching to D2D doesn't work.

No question is stupid or not worth asking. You were once a noob, right? :)

Thanks so much tedmond and freqsounds for your posts!
Initially tried wiring w2w dball2. Wouldn't learn key or remote start even after reflash to remove unnecessary check features.
So I pulled fuse on 4104 and grounded activation wire for approx 5 sec. Didn't see any led flash on unit or cotrol center. Thought maybe I heard a click maybe. Connected d2d harness and tried to get dball2 to learn key. Didn't work. Cut 12v supply from large harness connector and key learn procedure worked. Remote start worked and stayed running on first start.
Not sure which advice worked but in the end I did both plus wired dball2 up for w2w and d2d minus the extra 12v supply.
Also have smart start and it functions properly too. It is helpful to note that if you disconnect smart start from bitwriter port you should disconnect power (12v and ground) from the smart start module so unit can reinitialize. Had issue that it wouldn't communicate till I did this.
