2003 Toyota Land Cruiser Remote Start

Hi all,

I am trying to add a remote start to my 2003 Land Cruiser. I would like to use the factory remote (press lock x3 seems to be most common) and I have a couple of questions.

1. Do you have any recommendations as to which one to buy?
2. All ignitions wires on the car are thin wires. I've searched, but there isn't any pictorial guide for my car... so any directions would be greatly appreciated.

Might need some additional info.  I'm assuming you are in the States ( and not Africa with a turbo diesel and manual transmission )..

Does your Land Cruiser have a transponder based engine immobilizer system?  If yes, you will need a bypass module.

Are you satisfied with the limited range provided by the factory remotes?  Most are pretty short range.   Almost all after-market systems give you over 500 feet of range with some up to a mile.

Try this test :  Start the Land Cruiser and try the  factory remotes.  Most Toyota's disable the RKE system while the engine is running.  If this is the case, you would have to unlock the remote started Land Cruiser with a key to get in.  This fact might make you reconsider the 3x Lock type add-on remote start system and opt for at least a One Button Remote Start system.

It does have a transponder based system, so I will either need a bypass module. I don't mind the range as I will most likely be using during winter mornings in my pajamas looking out the driveway . For that reason, I also don't mind the add-on remote start system as an option.

So, if you or anyone has a recommendation on which after market brand, please recommend me one!

Also, I am not a professional installer but have installed few systems in the past. However, few that I have installed in the past had thick wires at the ignition harness. However, my 2003 LC has all thin wires at the ignition harness... so any wiring recommendations are also welcome.

Think I would hedge my bets a little and go for the Compustar CS800-s remote start system. 

They cost about $50 and are typically installed with the 4 button remotes but can be installed as both an "add-on" system that will remote start the engine with one, two or three presses ( programmable ) of the Lock button on the factory FOB and as a regular 4 button remote start system.  The nice thing is that it can directly use the Land Cruisers (+) Door Lock Motor signal ( no conversion relay ).  Another  other nice option is the D2D capability with iDatalink bypass modules. 

I would use either the ADS TBSL KO or ADS TBSL TI bypass module.  They can be found for around $40 and come pre-loaded with the correct firmware so they are ready to go right out of the box.  Very reliable and easy to program.  Here is a link :  https://cdncontent2.idatalink.com/corporate/Content/Manuals/TB-TI/ADS-TBSL-TI-EN_20130604.pdf   Follow the Type B-2 install guide.

The other nice feature of the CS800-s system is that if you need extra range or get tired of using the key to unlock the Land Cruiser when remote started, you can always start carrying the CS800-s remotes... 

As for the thin wires at the main ignition switch harness,  that is getting fairly common on newer vehicles.  You can cut the R/S systems thick ignition output wires ( at 3 inches or so ) and solder on thinner gauge wires for the run to the ignition switch.  You can also combine and fuse down the two Red +12Volt constant input wires.  Take a look at this Pictorial on the 2013 RAV4 :  https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp?tid=134111   It has very thin ignition wires ( see photo ) and that is how I handle them.

You say 2003 Land Cruiser, do you mean 2013 because I don't remember the 2003 having a chip in the key. Also the 2003 should have larger gauge wiring in it.
If you are happy with the range of the OEM remote I would suggest the CrimeStopper RS00-G5 unit.

If you have a 2013 (which would be a push-to-start), then I would recommend the Fortin EVO-ALL since it will do what you want and you won't need any extra parts.

Thanks rs specialist. It's a 2003 LC. You must be referring to an earlier 100 series land cruisers. I've attached a picture of the harness as a reference. I've confirmed with the dealer that it does have transponder keys. Thanks for the recommendation and I will take a look at the CrimeStopper TS00-G5 unit too.
