I have a recurring problem where the remote start function will not work after the battery discharges or gets disconnected. According the Directed Electronics (the mfg), this device should resume functionality upon reconnecting or recharging-no relearning process is necessary. Well, that doesn't appear to be the case. Last time this happened, we returned to the installer and they fixed it. The battery died recently and I'm back to a non-functioning remote start. The vehicle is a 2010 Toyota Highlander. There is no valet button installed. To go back to the installer means another charge. I'm hoping someone here can tell me thereset/relearn procedure. It has to be something simple as the car disappears at the installer for like 5 minutes. Help is greatly appreciated.

Ken

To clarify, by battery I mean the vehicle's battery. The car also has factory remote door locks.

Is it just the remote start that doesn't work, or does the system not respond to the remotes at all? How long has it been since the install?

Ask where the installer put the valet button. Even if they won't install one, see if they'll give you one. If not, you can always check with another local dealer. You could always order one yourself, but you'd think the local shops have some just lying around.

Thanks for the reply. No valet button. From another thread here, I was able to download the installation manual. It explicitly states that some installers choose not to install the valet button and customers should return the car to the installer to "finish the install." We'll see how that goes if/when I go back. It's been 2 years since the install but I've been back to them for this problem before.

The vehicle responds to all commands from the remote. When I press the start button, the car just cranks. It would probably keep cranking until either the battery died or the starter fried. I just hit the start button again and it stops cranking.

Thanks again.

Update: if I put a spare key in the ignition, still in the off position, the remote start works the way it should. Does anyone know if the valet button and program button are one and the same?
