hey every one. i'm new here and this might be a stupid question. so i have a 2015 wrangler with power side steps. the steps are activated by a ground signal. i would like to use the dome light as the input to the relay to provide the ground. my problem is the dome lights dimming feature when they shut off. will this create relay chatter. and how do i fix this. I used a besttop powerboard kit. that used wireless transmitters and magnets in each door jamb. battery issues, corrosion, swapping doors. or removing doors. have all been an issue. using the dome light would be cool. the steps would come down with the unlock on the key. or if a door is opened. and go up with the lock button on the key or when the unit is started. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks

While it's likely you will get relay chatter if you simply connect a relay to your dome light wires, you may be able to do this with a transistor instead.

Using an NPN transistor, connect the emitter to ground. Connect a resistor of a few hundred ohms to the base and connect the other end to the dome light wire that only gets power when a door is opened. Connect the collector to the trigger wire for your power side steps.

Connect it and if the relay chatters we can easily get it to quit. Just let us know if it chatters.
