Subject: Viper Remote Start, Horn Honk, 2015 Nissan Frontier?

I had Best Buy install the Viper DS4+ remote start system in my 2015 Nissan Frontier SV w/auto trans 2 wheel drive. The installers got it all working but keep telling me they can't get the horn to honk when you lock the truck but my original FOB makes it honk when locking. Can someone tell me or point me in the right direction to show these installers how to make it work? I was told by DIRECTED.COM support that it can be done but they won't help because I'm not a dealer or installer.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have never installed these nor am I directed authorized dealer but in perusing the install guide, it appears that the horn function is predetermined by the firmware for each particular vehicle. I think horn outputs are not enabled by default and therefore it has no signal output on that wire. Perhaps that option could be check marked in the firmware upload tool by the dealer according to the footnote for that output in the install guide. I have no way of knowing that though but if it is possible then that seems like the most logical approach to enabling a horn output that is not on by default for your vehicle. If they are able to enable the output, it would require a relay to pulse the vehicle horn wire as the DS4+ output is very low and directly connecting it would probably overload and blow the output.

Perhaps a directed dealer that has used these units may be able to offer more guidance. I would suggest trying a different Best Buy or another local directed installer to see if they may be able to help you. I uploaded the guide and linked it below for your reference. Good luck.

Here is a link to the DS4+ with Niss1HT firmware install guide for your truck :

https://directechs.blob.core.windows.net/ddt/933-NISS1HT-4.14.193_2015-Nissan-Frontier_IG_EN_20190304.pdf

As you can see from the wiring diagram on Page 7, Directed does not show a Horn connection.   I image that
there is an output that does perform that function but it is not listed in the harness listing on Pages 10 - 12.
Assuming that Best Buy is an authorized DEI installer, they should be able to contact their own Tech Support
or DEI Tech Support to get assistance. I would expect an additional charge for this extra work you desire,
similar to the extra charges for window roll-up / control.

Seems like they call the White 22 Pin harness H2 in this application, not H4. Either way, it looks like the
Brown/Black wire at Pin 5 is the answer.   But as Steve points out, it might need to be programmed on the DS4+
to work.

Thanks for the fast responses.

When I contacted DIRECTED the person who responded to my email said an Authorized Installer should also be able to program your remote to make it honk when you lock the vehicle with the remote/key fob if it originally honked with the OEM FOB which it did. I guess I'll need to find someone at another Best Buy to do this because while I was there their techs looked lost. I was a little upset to find that my truck sat in the bay for 3.5 hours and nothing was done. I told the tech you had my number why didn't you call me and just tell me you couldn't figure it out and I would've left 3 hours ago. I don't live there locally I had to drive for over an hour to get there so I wasted almost 6 hours.

Just to warn you, you will hate it, it's a "FULL honk", not the muted honk you get from the OEM remote

Hi, the brown/black is the correct wire to connect and it’s always “on” by default in all firmware. For it not to work is because the installer turned it off. And yes, it’s a full horn and not a muted horn. A Directed installer can easily connect on your module via Bluetooth and turn it on. It take 20 seconds to do so.

When you say FULL horn you mean like 10 seconds? Using my factory FOB it's just a fast 1/2 second honk.

Hi, not 10 seconds but long enough to be annoying for most people. It’s a matter of personal liking.

I don't think I'll hate it as much as I get in and out of my truck. With that Viper FOB when you put it in your pocket if you don't watch it you can easily unlock it without knowing.

I’ve been installing Directed products for over 26 years. I’m also a prototype tester and had a DS4 in my vehicle at least one year before it got released and trust me it’s enabled on every firmware unless the guy that programmed your module prior to installation turned it off. Also, yes it’s low current but it’s enough for the negative horn and no relay is needed. I installed over 1000 units so far on all types of vehicles and horn is always enabled, I personally disable it every time unless the client wants it. The option is in the security menu when connected to XKloader2 or if you’re editing it via Bluetooth. Authorized Directed dealer only.

Yes thanks. I saw that Kreg357 was able to provide the exact guide for your specific vehicle. It was the only thing I could find on the DS4+ using a google search. Directed has that stuff locked down pretty good if you are not a dealer. I was basically just referencing it to see if the unit had a horn output available and hoped others would chime in to guide you further.
