Subject: Trunk Release Problem, 2015 Kia Forte5
Date Posted: January 31, 2021 at 2:37 AM

I have installed a Prestige APS-687TWE into my wifes 2015 Kia Forte5, everything works with no problems with the exception of the trunk release:

I have hooked up the Dark Blue Wire: (-) 300mA Pulsed Channel 3 Output (Trunk) to the relay as described in the Relay Section of this site and the 12V from the relay to the Trunk Release Motor RED/ORANGE + @ dash fuse box, black 39 pin plug (A), pin 35, but on pressing and holding the trunk release button the trunk does not unlock, I can hear the reley clicking when the trunk button is pressed on the transmitter.

The wire coming from the relay shows 12V when the trunk release button is pressed and held on the Prestige transmitter, not sure if this has any significance but only the passenger parking light flash, but the trunk stays locked. The Trunk Release Motor RED/ORANGE wire in the fusebox shows 12V when the Kia remote is pressed and I hear the Kia relays clicking, both parking lights flash and the Trunk unlocks.

Relay is wired as the diagram below, if anyone has any idea what I may have done wrong or why this is not working I would be grateful.

Have you tried this wire?

Trunk/Hatch Release     yellow (rear handle switch)     (-)     dash fuse box, white 32 pin plug (D), pin 2

Two things to note. This wire requires a straight (-) signal, so the APS-687's (-) Trunk Release Output is fine. Remember that the doors must be unlocked for the rear handle switch to function, so the trunk release must be preceded by a Disarm/Unlock.

Hi Kreg, thank you for the response, I have not tried that wire, I didnt see it in the wire chart located on this site, I did find this wire, Trunk/Hatch Pin green - dash fuse box, white 32 pin plug (D), pin 5, I will check to see if either of these work.

So a quick question then, when using the Prestige transmitter without the trunk wire hooked up, when the doors are unlocked, the trunk also unlocks, so the trunk unlock function on the transmitter requires the doors to be unlocked, it cant be controlled seperatley to the doors? So the doors remain locked and only the Hatch releases.

If the Kia remote of the Hatch release is pressed the doors can remain locked and only the Hatch is unlocked.

I also noticed when pressing the trunk release on the Kia remote the onboard relay clicks twice, is this sending a double pulse or something?

Trunk/Hatch Pin green - dash fuse box, white 32 pin plug (D), pin 5    This wire is the Hatch pin or status wire. It will show a (-) signal when the hatch is not closed. Similar to a Door Pin wire.

"If the Kia remote of the Hatch release is pressed the doors can remain locked and only the Hatch is unlocked."
Often times the factory system can do things that are very hard or impossible to duplicate with an aftermarket system.

"I also noticed when pressing the trunk release on the Kia remote the onboard relay clicks twice, is this sending a double pulse or something?"
Might be a BCM wake-up, a Factory Alarm Disarm or a Parking Light flash, not sure.

I can't remember on a Forte but I recently worked on a KIA Soul for a rear hatch problem. On that vehicle there is no "Hatch Release" per se. The rear hatch locks and unlocks with the doors. There is a hatch release button on the outside hatch handle that will release the hatch when pressed. At that point you must continue to lift the hatch open. That button stopped working and the hatch couldn't be opened from the outside. The only way to open the rear hatch was to remove an inside trim piece on the hatch and manually release and push the hatch open. Testing found the hatch solenoid and switch OK, so something inside the BCM was bad. The customer didn't want to pay the dealers price for repair so we added a 4 button R/S system and a lower dash mounted Hatch Release momentary depress switch. The only problem with that is the hatch solenoid popped the hatch open (via R/S FOB or dash switch ) but not completely as there was a second catch on the latch. We then added some brake shoe coil springs to the hatch trim screws to get the extra 1/2" opening needed. But I digress... Is the Forte hatch release similar?

I just noticed this post. One other comment on the initial post is to make sure that you have the correct wire. For a 2015 Forte5, There are multiple Red/Orange (+) wires in the 39 Pin Black plug (A). Your comment about one side of the parking lights flashing seems strange. Is the passenger turn signal (versus parking light) coming on when you try the trunk release? Normally, I believe the vehicle flashes the hazards/turn signals with the factory remote. Are you observing the turn signal wire being driven to +12V versus the hatch release signal when you use the factory remote?   The info I have is as follows:

Turn Signal (Right)     red/orange (RF); red/orange (RR)     +     dash fuse box, black 30 pin plug (B), pin 17 (RF); black 39 pin plug (A), pin 11 (RR)

Trunk Release Motor     red/orange     +     dash fuse box, black 39 pin plug (A), pin 35

The correct plug (A) is on the lower left front of the fuse box. The correct wire for trunk release is on the left side of the A plug (with the plug inserted), about 1/2 way up.

Thanks for the replies.

Wife needed her car so I buttoned everything back up and didnt worry about the hatch release for now, it unlocks with the RS door unlock button so for now thats what were going to use, i`ll go dig into it again in the next few days.

Thank you for your input.

You are correct its the passenger side hazzard/Turn signal light coming on, mmmmm, I wonder if i had the wrong wire, I tore the lower half of the dash apart when she got home, but didnt have time to do anything else, I will double check tomorrow.

The hatch unlocks when the doors are unlocked and locked when the doors are locked, so if I cant figure it out I guess its no biggie.

I did notice one thing tonight, which is strange, the OEM key fob will not function if the car is remotely running, and occasionally the Prestige transmitter will not unlock the car, like its gone to sleep or something, I cannot hear the brain relays click, so I have to unlock the car door manually which sets of the horn/alarm, I didnt think this car had an alarm, I have hooked up the 15 Black w Blue trace Wire: Pulsed Ground Output Before Start to the Factory Alarm Disarm Pink wire and it still has this issue, I was reading the forum and read a forum post concerning "see Tech Doc 1300" I also found this note in the wiring diagrams section, I downloaded this tech sheet, Hyundai/Kia Door Lock Interface, if your not already familiar below is what it states and the diagram.

Guys, I`m not looking to be spoonfed any information, I read the forums and try to work this out before asking questions, so to you guys that relpy, I thank you so much.

So for the 2015 Kia Forte5 is this something I need to do?

Have you looked at the pictorial for the 14 Forte ? I've done a ton of those cars and I've never done that doc.

Mickb24-

As Chev posted, that doc is not necessary. Here is the link to Chev's excellent pictorial--https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp?tid=135901
This is for a 2014 Forte, 2015 is the same.

Lock wires are as follows:

Power Lock             pink/black     -     dash fuse box, white 32 pin plug (D), pin 12
Power Unlock             yellow/black     -     dash fuse box, white 32 pin plug (D), pin 3
Factory Alarm Arm     yellow              -     dash fuse box, white 32 pin plug (D), pin 14
Factory Alarm Disarm     pink        double -     dash fuse box, white 32 pin plug (D), pin 17

As for the factory remote, Hyundai and Kia remotes don't work with the car running. This is normal.

Not many Kia Forte's have a factory alarm. Check your car for factory alarm:

Open the driver's window on the car. close all doors/trunk/hood and lock the car with the factory remote. Wait for 1 full minute. Reach through the driver's window and open the door.
If you have a factory alarm, it will be set off.

For the Prestige remote, the APS687TWE 2 way remotes are sometimes noticeably slow to react, this has to do with timing of the 2 way system. If you get anxious and hold down the lock or unlock button, you can set off the panic alarm. I suspect this is what you were experiencing. Try the one way remote and see if you get more consistent results to confirm.

Yes, I looked at the 2014 Pictorial that information was great to be able to reaad through.

Double checked I have the Lock & Unlock wires.

For the Factory Alarm Disarm Yellow - Dash Fuse Box, WHITE 32 pin plug (D), Pin 17 I have this connected to the 15 Black W/Blue Trace Wire: Pulsed Ground Output Before Start from the Prestige R.S. Is this the correct wire from the Prestige for the APS687TWE?

For the Factory Alarm Arm   Double - i`m confused on which wire from the APS687TWE I would use for this, what does "Double" mean in this description mean?

I would have used a Bypass module for this to take care of the Lock/Unlock, Trunk, but as a just a consumer and not a retailer/installer seems like I cannot get access to flashing firmware.

I only see these 2 wires from the APS687TWE that note anything to do with the Disarm/Antitheft

14 Black w/ Light Green trace Wire: Pulsed Ground Output After Start The Black w/ Light Green Trace wire will provide a 1 second 300mA pulsed ground output after the vehicle is started under control of the remote start unit. Typically this wire will be used to re-lock the vehicle doors if the doors unlock automatically when the factory anti-theft system is disarmed. This wire will also activate when the transmitter is used to arm/lock the system. This output can be selected to operate in a number of different configurations as shown in selectable feature # 21 of Bank 3.

15 Black w Blue trace Wire: Pulsed Ground Output Before Start The Black w/ Blue Trace wire will provide a 1 second 300 mA pulsed ground output 500mS before GWR becomes active as well as when the transmitter is used to disarm the system. Typical use for this output would be to disarm a factory theft deterrent system to prevent false triggering of the factory alarm when the remote start unit engages or when the system is used to unlock the doors. This will also activate when the transmitter is used to disarm/unlock the system. NOTE: This output can be selected to operate like the door unlock output as set in alarm feature setting #1 by selecting feature #19 in Bank 3 for 2 Chirps or any other pulse timing shown for that feature selection.

Currently I am utilizing the 16 Black W/Red Trace on the drivers door pin to shutdown lights after Autolights/Parking Lights after shutdown. 16 Black w/ Red trace Wire: Pulsed Ground Output After Shutdown The Black w/ Red Trace wire will provide a 1 second 300 mA pulsed ground output 2 seconds after the remote starts GWR wire shuts down. This output will occur regardless of whether the circuit times out or is manually terminated. Typically this output will be used to re-lock the vehicle doors if the doors unlock automatically when the ignition circuit transitions to off. This output is selectable and can function as described in feature selection of bank 3 feature #22

So for door locks,

Power Lock             pink/black     -     dash fuse box, white 32 pin plug (D), pin 12   PRESTIGE RED
Power Unlock             yellow/black     -     dash fuse box, white 32 pin plug (D), pin 3   PRESTIGE GREEN
Factory Alarm Arm     yellow              -     dash fuse box, white 32 pin plug (D), pin 14   PRESTIGE BLACK/GREEN
Factory Alarm Disarm     pink        double -     dash fuse box, white 32 pin plug (D), pin 17 PRESTIGE BLACK/BLUE

Set Unlock to Double Pulse: Door U/L Feature to 500msL/DBL U/L.
Set Pulse Before start/Disarm: Set the Alt O/P Before Start feature to 500mS.

This ensures that there is a disarm pulse before the (second) unlock pulse. First Unlock pulse occurs with disarm and will be ignored by the car.

Double - refers to a double negative pulse. No need to set disarm to double pulse if you configure as above.
