  I was wondering if anyone knew if any of the bypass units from dei 555L 555U 555T or another one would work on a 98 Buick Century.  I have seen a list of module compatibility and most either do not include my car or only list the DEI VATS kit as the only compatible unit to allow remote start.  Or if there is an alternative unit that would work on my car and I could use w/o too much trouble with a 554t hornet.

   I've also seen my car's key security referred to as pass lock not pass key as the manual calls it, are those two different systems or just alternate ways of referring to them?  Some descriptions of the units above mention pass key or pass lock interchangeably which is why I wonder if it would be possible to use one of the units that says it works with pass key II (m car) autos.

you have the old style passlock. you need to find the orange tubing and use the gray and purple wires. you can use a 555l or setup relays to make your own resistor based setup.

What ever you want to call that type of anti-theft system, If your igntioin key has what is commonly referred to as a pellet on the shaft of the key just below the head of the key, then you do need to locate the orange tubing which comes from the key cylinder and follows the main Ignition wire harness like nighthawk mentioned. You may be able to identify the orange tubing by its shape. It looks a lot like a regular insulated wire, but it is not exactly round, but instead it is flattened a little because inside the orange tubing are 2 very thin white wires.

The pellet is actually a resistor, and you will need to use a DMM to measure the resistence by putting the each probe on opposite sides of the pellet. When the Ignition key is inserted into the cylinder, the pellet on the key makes contact with those two wires and reads the resistence. If the incorrect resistence is not read, then the fuel pump and starter will be disengaged and you wont be able to attemt to start the car for ten minutes.

The easiest bypass is a permanent one, but it disables the system entirely. I am only mentioning this method because it may help you understand how the system works, so you can make the best decision on how to bypass it for remote starting. This method simply requires you to cut the two thin white wires and put a resistor across the two ends that head toward the engine.

It is almost just as easy to use a single relay and a resistor method which would only temporarily bypass the system when you send a remote start command to your 554t. Here is how you can set it up: You need to cut one of the white wires and the other wire you only need to tap into without cutting.

Pin 85 goes to 12v+ constant
Pin 86 goes to (-)ground out when running from the Remote starter
Pin 30 goes to the engine side of the cut white wire
Pin 87a goes to the key side of the cut white wire
Pin 87 goes to one end of a resistor and the other end of the resistor goes to the other white wire that you only need to tap into.

This is actually very simple to set up and install.

You other options are to buy a universal bypass kit which will use dipswitches to set the resistence needed, and then install 12v+. ground, Ignition, (-) out when running, etc.

so basically you only need a relay and a resistor that matches the resistor you have in the key and use a relay to do this do not completely bypass this antitheft something is lyble to happen.

I would never totally bypass the system. just interface. I don't like when people do that. i have it interfaced in my camaro like that. it work great.
