Original VW starter installed by an installer into a '17 Tiguan after I purchased it. Someone borrowed the car, forgot to take my fob, and decided to pull out the hidden fob from under the dash. The wire coil and black tape are gone; only two bare leads coming out from under the dash remain.

The installer is no longer available. So I took the battery-less fob the driver pulled out and wrapped it 12 times with 24 gauge insulated wire, then crimped the two ends of that wire to the leads sticking out from under the dash. It does not do anything. I tried wrapping different numbers of turns up to 16, same.

Worse, my main fob stopped working completely. It does not do anything. I have had to use the physical key and steering column rfid reader to lock/unlock and start. Tried replacing fob battery, same. Tried reset procedure (using physical key, unlock/lock), same.

Anybody know what might be going on?

additional: Maybe the starter setup IS working, but I can't tell with the dead transmitting fob.

Not sure of the exact R/S unit or bypass module used but try this.

1. Remove the battery from the hidden/wrapped FOB.

2. Wrap 5 to 6 loops around the battery-less originally hidden FOB just above the LOCK button. Secure the wire so it doesn't shift position. The cut wires connections should be well soldered and insulated.

3. Don't lend your car to this person again.

Success. Thanks for your help. The 6 loops worked.

And the main fob lives again ... would you believe the 4th 2032 battery worked? I somehow ended up with 3 dead ones.
