VATS Bypass In 2000 Buick Century

Hi Members, I'm not an installer although I've installed 4 starter/alarms in my own vehicles. I'm looking to install a remote starter in my 2000 Buick Century winter crasher without a bypass module. I want to use a resistor to bypass the remote start function only. This site has referenced this issue as https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/file.asp?ID=237 but unfortunately I am unable to locate this file in a web search or on the 12volt.com site. I've researched this matter and came up 3 different recommendations, using one relay, the other using 2 relays, and another using 3 relays. Can someone set me straight on how to properly wire this bypass with resistor and relay or relays? I appreciate any assistance and thank you for your time.

Are you doing a permanent bypass to rid the annoying problems of VATS or adding a Remote Starter?

If you just want to delete VATS, buy a Directed 652T resistor pack, measure the current key resistor and select the correct value from the 652T pack & solder it onto the cut VATS wires. No need for relays. Just remember those VATS wires are very thin and somewhat delicate.

I'm not having any issues with VATS at this time. I'm adding a remote starter and would to bypass the VATS for the remote start process only. I've found conflicting information stating 3 different ways to do this, using 1/2/or 3 relays. Thanks for the reply.

Personally, installing a remote start on that vehicle I would use a Fortin INT-SL+. It would cost more than the relays and resistor but it would do much more* for you and be an easier install.

* the INT-SL+ would handle the Door Lock, Trunk Release and supply a Tach signal besides bypassing the VATS - all via one Data connection to the OBD2 port.

With the Fortin INT-SL+ it comes pre-programmed and all ready to go right out of the box.

If you wanted to go with a relay and resistor, only one relay is needed. You would use the R/S's GWR or (-) Status Output to control the relay.

Thanks for the comeback and info. I was trying to do this as cheap as possible since its my winter crasher, a friend gave me a used Omega RS-7K2 that I was considering using. If I were to take your advice and us the Fortin INT-SL+ could you recommend a good reasonable starter/alarm to use with the Fortin INT-SL+?. Thanks for all your help, let me know.

The Fortin INT-SL+ will work with any decent R/S system. It would be "hard-wired" with direct wire connections for all supported functions.

The first question is do you want a R/S w/alarm system or just a R/S with keyless entry?

If you want a R/S with alarm functions the prices go up a bit. A decent entry level system would be a Firstech CM-900AS. You would still need a RF kit that includes the antenna and remotes.
For a bit more you could get a Compustar CS7900AS. This is a complete system that includes long range remotes.

If you just wanted a R/S system with no alarm functions, check out the Compustar CS925-S. Good system with remotes with decent range.
