Subject: Keep blowing fuse help!

I  have put in my alarm and I keep blowing the fuse. All the options on the alarm work fine when I test them.Automatic doors , trunk, dome light, shock sensor, and hood pin. I will drive the car to the store 10 minits  away and all is fine. I will drive for an hour and all is fine. I stop and start the car and the fuse will blow with no rym or reason. The ground is good and the and the must power to run any of these options is the power trunk and I put a 15 amp fuse on this to be sure and it blows the 30amp main fuse. I contacted the manufacter of the alarm and they didn't tell me anything that I didnt try. Any help on this would be greatly apprec...:errr:

Does the fuse blow only when you start the vehicle or does it do it at other times as well?

No, the remote start option is not inst... it is standerd transmission and I didn't want this function. I use it as a traditional alarm. I don't know when it blows, it might be today or two days from now. I cant track it and I have looked and an electrition has looked at it all and all seems good???

That's not what I was implying. I was asking if the fuse blows when you start the vehicle with the key or at other times as well. If it's an intermittent problem, then it's likely you have a poorly insulated connection on one or more leads, specifically the main power lead(s) or any 12V+ output lead from the alarm or relays that you may have added. You'll need to comb through your connections and check each one carefully until you find it unless you can narrow it down more than you have already.

I  only have one 12v+ lead out from the alarm. One relay for the doors, pkg. lihgts and engine kill. I dont know exactly when it blows, maybe when I start it, when I drive or when I stop the car.It is VARY inconsistant in the timing of when it blows that is why I cant track it.I saudered all the connections to  encure this wont happen. Could it be a bad relay and if so how do you check???

From a consistant 12v+ power source in the car. I was going to take it right from the battery but I was advised it wouldnt make a difference.

If the problem doesn't occur with any regularity, and being that it's a new install, its unlikely that you have a bad relay. Problems like this are usually caused by wire exposed at any one of your connections coming into contact with a ground or a chafed lead near a sharp piece of metal. I'd look for any sharp pieces of metal near the alarm harness and main power wire if you are sure all of your connections are well insulated. Also check any leads you may have run to other components such as the siren, sensors, lights, etc.

Where did you tie into your constant 12V+ source?

Ok I will try to look at my siren and my hood pin to see if I see any imperfections in the wire to those areas. I dint think it is the main power because I have had this unit out to change the fuce MANY times and all is good.Thank you for your help, I will look at it tomorrow.

Ok I vave been through this alarm from top to bottom and I found NO cut wires or kinked wires or any problems. I fixed this alarm last week and it was all good untill I blew the fuse again. I went for a 1 mile drive and it blow again. But it worked fine all week. Is thier any other things I can look at or do????

This may be a long shot, but I've seen it before. Check to see if you have a small bead of solder or even a small strand of wire floating around inside the control module.

Ok I will look for that and see and shake it a little to see if anything sounds loose. Still fighting this thing!!

Ok I took the brain out and looked  at it good and did not see anything out of the ordinary. I out a new fuse in yesterday and all was fine till just now.posted_image Yes it blew again. In the istallation gide it says you cant use a power trunk opener. Is this the reason it keeps blowing even though I dont use it all the time??? It peaks at 12+ when it is in use and I am blowing a 30 amp fuse. 1991 trans am  gta.  HELP!!!!

You can try connecting your main power leads directly to the battery, but without being there to look at the installation myself and only being able to go by the information you've provided, I'd suggest having a second pair of experienced eyes have a peek at it. Chances are it's something simple causing your problem, but even if it's not, an experienced installer should be able to quickly locate and fix the problem.

I have had an experienced installer look at it and he said it was all good, and my friend whome is a lisences electrition look at the diagrams and tracked the readings through each function of the alarm and all the readings were well below spec. The fuse allways blows when the car is motion that is why it is so hard to track. Could it be the main brain itself causing it to short out?????

You've obviously have something shorting out in the vehicle that is causing the fuse to blow while the vehicle is in motion. You will have to literally check every inch of the power lead the fuse is protecting to locate your problem. If every inch of it is okay, then you'll have to check each item you have connected to that power lead. You can disconnect one item at a time, drive it and if it doesn't blow the fuse, you found the culprit, but if you can not locate it, I'd still suggest bringing it to a more experienced installer and not an electrician.

Ok. I took it to a professional install place and they did it all and ran the wires and did it all over again to exactly the way I had it , but not as clean. They ran it right to the battery and all and it still blows the fuse. They said we will re-install it for you but we will not warranty it because they don't sell these units. After doing some tests with the alarm itself I have come to the conclusion that when it is hot out side the fuse will blow evry trip. When it is cool or not to sunny the fuse will not blow for days. Is the main unit getting too hot os is it a sh#%t alarm and try a real one.

You might want to think about just buying a new unit and start from scratch. i hate to see you do that but with all the trouble you are having it might be worth it.

this has been going on for soo long, i forgot what alarn you had....

if you still think that is is a bad wire, try unplugging the harness from the alarm brain.  Using a DMM set to ohms or continuity if you have it and hook one side to the metal chasis on the car and us the other to test each lead at the alarm.  If any of them show anything other than an open circuit then carefully check that wire.  (the ground of course should show continuity or any other wire that is supposed to show ground, such as - triggers etc, but this will work for power lines.

why don't you try to take out the main unit of the alarm and see that if the fuse blow .if dont 't then try to measure how much power the alarm needs for work when the siren chirp ,or when lock doors,or windows etc . the consumption must not exceed 2 -3 Ah

I'v done that, the maximum amp. to any impuls is the trunk and that runs about 10 amps peak and then it dies. Today I went on a four hour return drive and all is good. I drive to the mall on a hot day, 5 min. and it will blow the 30 amp fuseposted_image This is the problem.

try to disconect the trunk (it is gest a make sure that this is the problem ) ,but do you gest conect the trunk to the alarm or you put an relay betwen them ?

the alarm output for trunk does not suport direct conection

but where the fuse is conect to .and between what ?

The trunk has its own relay, I tried to dissconect it and it made no difference at all.The fuse is on the main power coming into the unit and direct to the battery.

BIG problem .Do you have some knowledge about electronics ?

If you do, then take out the alarm brain and try to search what is wrong. That means you have to check the power transistors ,diodes ,etc.

It could be a transistor  if you said that blows when is hot outside and you can try first if some of the transistors is hot .

But you said 10 amps ,that is to much.
