I installed a remote starter in my wifes Grandmas 99 Cavalier about a year and a half ago. She just called my wife and told her she wanted me to pull it out because her mechanic said that the remote starter is killing the alternator. I dont know any details about her conversation with the mechanic or why she even brought her car in, but I thought I would check here to see if anyone knows if this could be true that the RS is killing the alternator. Thanks

Yeah right killing the alternator, that mechanic needs to check and see if he's got screws loose. I know my 700IQ kills the battery when I just let the car sit and don't drive it for weeks. Alternator-NO.

%$@#$#% That is what the mechanics always say. If there is a problem it will be blamed on the alarm. The Remote start kills the alternator just as much as a radar detector slows down a car. Doesnt Happen.

That is exactly what I thought, I mean the remote starter just does the same thing as the key does. But for posterity's sake, I have to ask if the RS could cause damage to the alternator if the RS was installed wrong, for example If an ignition wire was missed? I know I grabbed 2 Ignition wires and an accessory wire, which is all I can see is needed. I actually think that this is just a case of the mechanic thinking he knows all and just slipped a line in that those RS things are bad for your alternator and then my wifes grandma believed him and likely will be too stubborn to believe me when I tell her the mechanic was full of it. Thanks guys.

@%$#$#$** mechanics is right, ESPECIALLY the ones at dealerships, they are too busy scratching their @sses, and being f-ing LAZY, if they actually took the time to investigate the problem THOROUGHLY rather than blame the problem on any aftermarket car audio/alarm product they could make more $$ because 90% of the time if they remove the product the vehicle STILL has problems, DR. I believe this is another case of LAZINESS/I don't want to mess with that car--ITIS

OH yeah one other thing, IF that component were going do damage the alternator it would have done it a lot sooner than a year and a half, tell your wife's grandma to find a mechanic with some freaking brains ------------- My mechanic told me, "I couldn't fix your brakes, so I made your horn louder"
