Question:
I have a 2003 Dakota R/T. Since I don't have the cash for an alarm system as of yet, I have a Varad LED I want to wire in for visual purposes in the meantime when the truck is unoccupied. Positive goes to constant +12V, negative to ground, and a third wire is supposed to be connected to any source providing +12V when the ignition is turned on to shut the LED off. I found an easy source for the constant 12V on a harness down underneath the steering wheel, but is there a simple way to connect my other 12V source without taking apart the dash to get to the radio? I have the 2002 wiring color codes but am having a hard time locating the appropriate wires up underneath the dash.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

you might be able to fine an unused slot in the fuse panel that comes on with ign.

Take the steering column cover off and use the wire there.

Yes, it should be pretty easy to get ignition just about anywhere on a Dakota.

-The whole driver's underdash comes off with just three screws, and the wires going to the steering column are plainly visible.

-The fuse box is probably the easiest place.

-I forget exactly how the radio comes out, but I think it's basically one screw someplace or another, and the whole panel around the radio pulls right off, and then four more screws to get the radio out.

-If the cigarette lighter shuts down with the ignition off, you can go there.

While we're on the subject of LEDs, my led was right on top/near the 508D-proximity sensor.   It wouldn't go off/send a signal to the brain when I was "snooping around" inside....like half my body was in the car trying to set it off !   So, I tried relocating momentarily, and yeah, it worked.  Put it back, and no, didn't work.  So I ended up drilling another hole elsewhere.  How come when I had the 700IQ's proximity sensor there with the led right on top...it wasn't disturbed by it.  It functioned normally, but not with the 508D.  Are both digital?  I miss the remote adjustablility of the 700IQ, but I now love playing with the RS3...
