I looked at the wire diagrams listing here on this site but they only have them for 1995 and then skips to 1996 explorer models.  If some know where I can find one please let me know.

I am trying to buy a remote start for my vehicle and I need to know if it is positive or negative locking system.  I am haveing a had time finding this information.  I need to know if I need relays or not for the remote start I buy.

Thank you

Notes:
NOTE: Some models of this vehicle are equipped with PATS (Passive Anti Theft System). Use PKF bypass module to over-ride during remote start.  *1 Two wires each at switch, both are common, only need to power 1 each      during remote start.  *2 You may also use the pink/green power unlock wire.  *3 Also found to be WHITE/ black at the rear of the switch.  *4 To avoid the dome light delay and dome light time-out use the separate door triggers. In the drivers kick panel find yellow/black for the drivers door, lt. GREEN/ YELLOW for the drivers rear door, and WHITE/ purple for the rear hatch. In the passengers kick panel find gray/red for the passenger front door, and pink/lt. blue for the passengers rear door. All five wires are negative trigger and must be diode isolated together.  *5 Arms on lock only with door open. It is necessary to send a signal to door trigger as well as lock to arm factory alarm.   *6 The PCM is located at the top of the firewall towards the passenger side, the tan / YELLOW tach wire is also found at the back of the instrument cluster.  *7 Also found yellow/white (-) at the firewall connector.  *8 The power antenna module is in the right rear quarter panel.

Ok I am having problems posting this.

How can I find out if I have the pats system or not.?

I have a normal key and a remote that has 3 buttons on it

1. push once lock push twice and the horn beeps once.

2. Panic button

3. Unlock button

Is this an alarm system or a theft device?

Your 1996 Ford Explorer uses a reverse polarity locking system.  Use the wiring diagram from the responce from before to locate the correct wires.  Test these wires BEFORE cutting them.  They should change polarity with the position of the lock switch.  Example a wire may show 12+ when locking and show 12- when unlocking ON THE SAME WIRE!  If you have any more questions email me back.  I can send you some wiring diagrams to show you how to wire your relays.

Krusty,

The way to find out if your Explorer has a factory alarm is pretty easy.  First, roll down the drivers side window.  Next with keys in hand, close the drivers side door.  Now press the "lock" button on your factory keyless entry.  This is important, WAIT FOR AT LEAST 30 SECONDS.  After waiting unlock the drivers side door from the inside with your hand and not THE KEY!!  If the door comes open and the horn does not pulse YOU DO NOT HAVE A FACTORY ALARM, but if it does you do have a factory alarm.  Any questions about wiring around a factory alarm email me and I will send you some pictures.

Thanks,

Steven D.

Yes, the horn beeps when I have tried that.  I just cannot get it to do that by shaking the vehicle.  In addition, I will take the pictures if you have them

Where is the alarm located on the vehicle it self?  I purchased the RS4LX remote start system and it should be here by next week.  It will work off my factory remotes to start the car.  I just need to figure out how to hook it up I have looked under the dash and the wire harness is tight it should be a fun chore.

Thank you

Is there a site that has a wiring diagram for a 1996 explorer sport? I have seen some for older vehicles but not the 1996 Explorers.  I just picked the thing up to take to Iceland and still need to find a book on it the person I bought if from did not have one.  He always took it to the dealer.  I like to have something on hand and do most of the work my self if I can.  I am planning on picking up a book when I get home on leave hopefully I can find one there at the stores.  Here in Germany I will have to mail order one from somewhere in the states any way.   I the meantime I just need something dealing with wiring when I install my remote start to know where wires go.

Thank yoou
