I was making a key for a year 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse yesterday and I suspected it was a transponder key. I dropped the shroud and the halo around the ignition had a small terminal and 2 blue wires running back over to the switch itself. This must have been the transponder wiring harness. The 2 blue wires were joined by 2 black wires at the switch and those 4 wires ran back under the dash. Does anyone have a clue how to bypass this apparatus. I'm not thinking about spending the $5,000 that they are asking for one of those programming boxes.

Yeah, you didn't mention if the key worked or not. Looks like that car doesn't have a transponder.

When I turned the ignition, the only thing that happened was the speedometer lights came on.

There was no other key. The car is at an impound yard and I am a locksmith. I'm just trying to find out if those 2 blue wires are related to the transponder system.

p.s. I called Mitsubishi later and they said it would cost $130 to key it up if it was a transponder car...plus the car towed.

Well it looks like there's no transponder in that car, maybe it's got some sort of aftermarket security system installed?????  starter problem???  could be many things but my Car data base doesn't tell me it's got a transponder. Look up under the dash and see if there are any extra wiring that might belong to a security systems and try to bypass it. Good luck!

Yeah, I don't know. There was a  sticker on the window which said'this car is equipped with an immobilizor', but it was signed Mitsubishi..in other words original equipment.  My Ilco key blank reference book shows 2000 Eclipses are equipped with transponder keys.
