I have heard that the Hornet 554T is not a very reliable alarm system . It has a tendency to fail alot and the quality is not DEI quality with cheaper parts and unreliable range. This is what I've heard so far from other installer's about this system. They say the Python or Viper is a better system ( but less features ).

The Prestige 996 is nice...

The Ultrastart 4250 and 4500 are also nice (great range)..

The Viper 790XV is really nice but expensive.

i thought the prestige 996 is same as 554t with less function no tempurature sensor etc...etc...thats what i heard in this forum.i think 554t is perfect if it comes with the button locks to prevent unwanted button pressing and some kind of muting function that allows you to turn off the car alarm siren with the remote like lynx 2000 did!

-you cant say that hornet is not reliable system, but to say that viper and python are better.
-i notice that 5 ppl i know who have 550esp and one of them has his installed at circuit city and it worked fine for about a year and his system went nuts, the unlock/lock sometimes work and some time doesnt and the rs now failed.
-as for this customer now say to his installer, "how come my unit sucks so bad, it only lasted for about a year?" so that's what happen to installer who told you that, cause the customer tell them so, but really something lil might have gone wrong like loose wire or whatever but it can be any case. but still the customer inform that the system doesnt work. so now the installer tell you so. but you might say that 1:5 unit is a low ratio, if it is you still cant say that viper is better.
another case, one of the instaler who hide the antenna under the dash instead of somewhere clear(i did put it up for him), say a customer like him who know nothing like my friend here might come out to other ppl and say that viper doesnt have the range. hey! there goes the rumor. so you know there are many cases that i can come up with that may contradict the good use of dei product.
-well my point is that you can never judge how a system reliable or not, the semiconductors in system can be short circuit SOMEHOW and manage to work anyways, like a capacitor who may get short and may die slow or just a bad installer himself. it can be any case.
-i hope yall guys out there who reading this may not intimidate of getting the one you want 'cause someone make a statement upon a unit.

jeff nothing to offend you here, but i want your reply on this if possible

The 554T is a reliable system, also has a more attractive remote! I think that the 790 & 554T are the same just the way dei has been doing in the past with their products. Alarms are only good as the install, good install-good performance, etc. Jac2, extra relays, fuses, diodes will come in very handy depending on what features you want. Read the manual, it tells you what needs relays, fuses, tips for best performance and such. Better to safe than sorry. DO NOt use a tester with a light built in, cars are very sensitve now days. One bad move and it can be costly. Invest in a multimeter, very reliable. Remember, always check wires against the diagrams. Good luck
