Hmmm....I've never worked on a '87 911 
On my car, though, there's a plastic plug piece, where there's a male end on the outside of the door, and a female end on the other. I had to get those two pieces apart, and get the wire through there, then into the car. I never had to drill holes in the door. I would try as hard as possible to get the wires through what's already there. Maybe push a hanger through and attach some wire to it?
