I am wanting to install a saftey switch on my 1996 Ford Ranger so I can install A remote starter on it. I want the alarm to not even try to start up the truck if it is in gear, but if it is in neutral let it crank up. Has anyone out there found a switch or a series of relays that will work for this? Thanks for the info in advance.

find out if your truck has a neutral safety wire that runs to the ecu from the shifter/tranny. from there, i believe someone else might be able to help you out as i would only succeed in getting you to blow your ride up.

My notes tells me that the nuetral safety is not grounding and that the OEM switch opens the starter circuit. That's all I have for this vehicle.

Thanks for the replys. I ran across someone on this site that said that they used a magnetic switch mounted just behind the gear shifter to let the unit know when it was in neutral. Ever heard of that? I really only want it for the mornings in the winter, but I know me I will want to use it all of the time so I want to be safe about it. If anyone thinks of anything else please post your thoughts. Thanks again.
