i installed a remote starter in a 96 gmc suburban.  everything works fine but if you start the truck with the key, you have to switch the remote starter off and back on again in order to start it with the remote. anybody got any ideas????

try holding start button for 6 seconds and then press the start button again. this overides the infinite wisdom design tech had in making their remote starters safe from accidental starts. other than that i can't remember if you can program that feature out.

There is a way to de-program that option, or turn it off through the programming. Read the manual, it should mention something about it. If you dont have a manual, let me know what model you have and I can try to look it up for you.

Here is what I have though for one model. It may be the same for all units.

The option is called "Enable" Feature. It is option 7 in the programming bank. Factory default is "Enable" Feature, and you need to turn it off.

To Program:

1. Turn toggle switch to OFF. The LED will flash a diagnostic code, so wait until it has finished before proceeding.
2. For option 7 press the white button 7 times, the LED will flash once after the first press, twice after the second ... and flash 7 times after the seventh press.
3. Once you have reached the right level (7 flashes) Press the start button for 1 full second. The LED should flash Once to tell you that you are at the option setting. Press start again and it will flash twice to tell you are in the default. (so just press it once!)
4. The programming mode will automatically exit after 6 seconds.
5 Flip the toggle switch back to ON

Good Luck
