Subject: Basic ’95 Maxima questions - Alarm and RS

Hi, just some basic questions I was hoping you could help me with before I get into this:

My friend has a '95 Maxima with the factory alarm installed. It's a 4 button remote that can do lock, unlock, trunk, panic, and her windows. She said if you hit the unlock button once, it does the driver's and passenger door. If you hit it again, it does the back doors. And if you hit it again it will do the windows.

She would like to add a remote starter. I told her that her options are to just add one on (and have a separate remote for it), or she could just get a combo alarm/RS, and add it on to her existing alarm. I think this is the better option for range issues....but I'm assuming I would have to shut down the factory alarm when remote starting.

My concern is will she be able to mimic all of the functions of the factory alarm and remote if she adds on a new one? Like, will she still be able to open her windows via the new remote if I add it on to her factory alarm?

Any help would be cool!

Thanks guys!

Sorry for asking again, but I'm kind of stuck....can anyone help me out here? I just want to know if I can mimic the factory alarm with an aftermarket one....especially the windows feature? Will this be a smooth addition?

Thanks!

You should be able todo everything the factory alarm can yes. From what i can find/know, there is no problem with putting window mods in that car, you would need todo this to work the windows. I am not sure if you can use the factory alarm window mods, i have not heard or seen anyone do that. As for the loack/unlock - no problem there, just program the alarm from double pulse to unloack all the doors. And the trunk is easy as well, no problem with that one.

THANKS for the response!

Well, I guess if I just tag the door lock wires, then when the new alarm locks and unlocks the car, it will automatically arm and disarm the factory one, too, right?

Also, for example, if I hook up the new alarm, and she hits the new remote "unlock" button the same amount of times that she would have to on the factory remote to open the windows...shouldn't it still open the windows? I mean, if she gives it 3 pulses, why wouldn't that work? Unless the new alarm doens't know what to do with 3 pulses.

Yes, the factory alarm will arm and disarm with a afterarket one. As for the 3 pulse I am not sure, never tried it before.

actually, i think you will be better off talking to guys here....

Maxima.org Forums

First check out the 4th gen forums and then the audio electronics forums. try searching there too. I'm a member and it is one of the most entensive site when it comes to the maxima. I can guarantee you will get every answer you need concerning the maxima. I honestly doubt that those controls can be replicated with an aftermarket control (you have no idea how nissans cause us their drivers some hell at times) but then, i'm not a guru on the 4th gens :)

Thanks lophix....I went over to that site, did some research, and posted the question. We'll see what happens.

I've heard both ends of the spectrum so far.....that the new remote would be able to mimic the window control....and that it absolutely would not. I'm just trying to get it figured out before I start :-)

The factory alarm arm and disarm wires are the same as the lock and unlock wires. You have to take wires from the remote start to disarm and rearm the system. Most systems do have them. So when you go to remtote start a wire will send a pulse to disarm the system which will unlock the car and once started or during starting the other wire will send a pulse out to lock the car back up.

the lock and unlock wires are unfortunalty in the door. Lock is light GREEN/ red and unlock is GREEN/ YELLOW. Good luck!!

Wow, thanks AutoObsessions, that never dawned on me. I still haven't started yet...still researching :-) I didn't realize they were the same wires for the lock/unlock as arm/disarm....it makes sense now I guess. Someone else had told me that there's no need to disarm the factory alarm before remote starting...and that it would be fine to just remotely start the car and the factory alarm wouldn't be affected. I guess that would make my job easier if it's correct :-)

Also, any hints on getting to the ECM for the tach wire? Isn't it behind the radio?

the ecu should be to the right of the gas pedal. i think 2 philips screws hold the small plastic panel in place and voila! you'll see a million wires :) i asked somewhere else, but i'll ask here again...is there a particular reason people go to the hood for a tach wire? in the camaro, it was right behind the tach gauge in the dash. by the way cpgoose, look for delio77 on the org. he's done it to a crapload of 4th gens. send him a pm or something and he should be able to practically walk you through. Also, i got a 12 pin harness with a starter kill relay, valet button and led from dei last week friday or so. want them?

Awesome, thanks for the help (again). I'll shoot delio77 a message, and see what happens.

As for the tach, the only time I went under the hood for it was when I couldn't find it (or reach it for that matter) in a Taurus. It was actually easier to just follow the siren wire through the firewall, and to the correct wire. Usually, though, I do snag the tach under the dash somewhere (sometimes at the ecu, sometimes at the tachometer).

About the harness and stuff....sure :-) You can shoot me an email or something, and we can work out the details. I can paypal you or something like that.

Just clarify, i am pretty sure that the unlock requires a double pulse, so that means a single pulse will disarm the factory alarm. You may not need to worry about it though if the alarm is not triggered during a remote start.

As far as Tach, It is WHITE/ Green at the ECM which is located in the front of the center console on the transmission hump. The wiring is easily reached by removing the small black panel just to the front of the center console on the passenger side. the wire is in the middle row, 7th one in from the left.
