Subject: 5-Wire Lock Help

I just finished the install of a Hornet 554T in my 2001 Ram 1500 with only one hitch - I cant get the door locks to lock - unlock works just fine following the diagram in the relay section of this website.

When I connect the relay using the diagram for the lock side, it will not function and heats the relay up.  I have double checked the connections and everything follows the diagram for that vehicle.

I must be missing something really simple - please help!!

Gary

There is definately something wrong there. If you wired it backwards you would have blown the fuse, you did fuse it right(power feeding the relays)? What color wires did you use?

the reason why is that both lock and unlock are not 5wire systems!  they are 5wire reverse polarity for unlock...rest at ground, but need +12v to unlock.  but the lock is positive pulse.  so if you have both relays wired up for 5wire reverse polarity, then thats your problem.  wire the lock relay like this

85  -output from alarm

86  constant 12v

30 constant 12v

87 tap into lock wire(ORANGE / violet)

and if you have a positive ouput from the alarm, then ground 86.

Jimmy,

I tried your diagram and I can hear the relay responding but no activation on the locks. I have (-) output for lock.

Any other ideas??

Thanks,

Gary

so the relay is clicking for lock right? are u sure you got the right wire tapped into, and are u sure you got 12v going into the wire from the relay?

Try looking for ORANGE / green at the central timer module to the right side of the steering column. It will be positive trigger for lock.

Jimmy and auex,

Thanks for the info - I am trying it in the morning.

Jimmy, I don't have keyless entry on my truck so would both lock and unlock be 5-wire?

I am suspecting that I have a bad relay.

no, thats what the program says...that unlock is 5wire and lock is 3wrie positive pulse.    i never worked on that particular vehicle so i dont know for sure first hand.  but i got the info from directechs.com  and they are usually accurate.  auex said lock is ORANGE / green....im almost sure it was ORANGE / violet but i may be wrong.  but test with a multimeter before you send 12v positive thru that wire.  if its not the right wire, u can cause electrical problems in your truck!!!
