Just Installed a r/s in a 04 camry today, went to learn tach, and the car wouldn't start. Had to get it towed to the dealer. They said I blew up the transponder ring. I only used a key and ring bypass, so i didn't go into the factory pats wiring. Has anyone heard of this? Oh ya and the car was really new...10/03, freakin paint was still wet. The dealer is telling me 2 weeks for a new ring, so two weeks worth of car rental for this customer...lovely. Thanks

Never heard of this, but did the module you used have a key sense wire ? This is to ensure that the module would shut down when the user inserts another key into the cylinder so that it doesn't read two keys at the same time causing the blanking of the keys.

The bypass I used (autotran) doesn't have a key sense disconnect. I typically only use them on pk3, which will set a bcm code if the customer leaves a key in too long. As far as the camry goes, I didn't even have the autotran plugging in when I was testing tach(it was still on the bench).

WOW, that is really wierd then ?? So you went to learn the tach without the universal bypass module even hooked up and then it wouldn't start for you ? Did you do anything with the starter wire, like wire in a starter disable relay nornally open ? Just trying to figure out what happended to your installation.

Ya, I thought it was wierd, no i didn't cut any wires. The only thing I did out of the ordinary was i hooked up my tach wire to the black wire at the obdII connector. We have some camrys come back when it gets cold, so i don't go to the injector or coil wires. On guy at the shop says he get tach for matrixs and some other toyotas there, so i had that hooked up when i went to start it. But i don't think that even a pos ultrastart should feed-back on the tach wire. The dealer says that i blew up the transponder ring, so we might have one of our tech guys going to the shop to check it out. I guess i'll know more then. Just one of those things i guess

it sucks for sure, oh well. As far as getting screwed i don't have anything to loose except for a 2% bonus for damages off my labour. But my employer and reputation is getting the once over. And of course the dealership that sold the lady her camry told her not to put a r/s in it, as usual. I'll you people posted.

which company are you working for? the company is liable for all the damages. It shouldn't cost you anything.
Installed lot of RS in Toyota and never have this problem. Most dealership doesn't know what they are talking about. When you have a chance double check your installation again to find you error on wiring.

are you sure you didn't knock the keys out of the system. I have seen this happen on certain Toyotas. I have been doing remote stars for one of the toyota dealers here in Edmonton for 2 years now and have never had anything like that happen. As far as tach goes I always grab the injectors on the Toyotas and never have any come backs for no starts when it is cold. I aways use the viper 555F on the Camary.

[/QUOTE/] I work on a percentage as most installers do: 46% or labour + 2% if i have no damages, which i might lose if they find something I did wrong. I did go over the install for about 2 hours making sure i didn't cut into any wires when i was opening up harnesses or something like that.

That is what i thought the problem was, i've seen that on a few fords(mostly escapes). The dealer is the one who is telling me the ring is shot... i don't know what to think. If you've seen toyotas that lose their keys then maybe thats what happened and the dealer has diagnosed the problem incorrectly? If your installing dei then you have a lot better tach pickup than i have to work with. I wish i was still installing that stuff sometimes. On a matrix, vibe or corolla, they always come back if i go to an injector.

ouch!!!!!!that sucks.!!! never had/heard that happening before when using the factory key. but i have heard of that happening when an installer (from another bay/store) tried to program a 555f to a 2000 avalon. what really sucks is that it cost $2600 to fix! why so much? well, the dealership said that the avalon comes equipped with only THREE KEYS programmed to the computer of the car. when he programmed the 555f incorrectly, he locked up/wiped out the entire code for the computer. therefore, the dealership said that they needed 3 new keys and a new computer to install into the avalon. the dealership led us to believe that all toyotas with transponders are all like the avalon---3keys to 1computer and unable to re-program them. i hope that's not your case! good luck!
